This OVA is set during the middle of the series having some of the anime's humorous gags on the island that Godai and company get washed up on such as Godai and Mitaka's arguing over getting Kyoko's attention, the apartment tenants inconveniencing Godai to some capacity, and Mitaka's fear of dogs tormenting him around Kyoko's dog, Soichiro. It adds nothing new to the series plot-wise and is more a bonus treat for ||||||||

After the disappointment of Maison Ikkoku: The Movie, I was very cheered by how this OAV was done. Since the story was one by Takahashi-sensei (with a few additions), it works very well. However, the improved art and animation are really a joy to see. I have to say that as I watched Mitaka's cruiser (yatch) sink, I laughed out loud as Akemi, Yotsuya, and Ichinose-san saved all of the beer and sake from going to the ocean depths. The cries of dispair when a single, full can of beer falls into the ocean was just a hoot. There were other humorous moments as the OAV writers clearly understood the humor of the series. The writers also picked up all of the other elements that made the series so much fun that is was just a sheer delight for this MI fan to watch. Because of the timeframe when this OAV takes place in, there's nothing that really can be done for the Kyoko-Godai romance, but that too is addressed and in a nice way. Bottom line: MI fans will most certainly want to own this should Viz ever do it.Last updated Sunday, September 05 2004. Created Sunday, September 05 2004. |
