A mix of the cheap and tawdry ('Why are there two naked women in my house!?') and some decent laughs ('Riho-san! I didn't get any of that, but I think he was just really mean to me!'). I wondered at first if these five girls would literally be Goddesses (stranger things have happened), but no, they are just hot girls with nowhere else to go. We do get to know them and they seem likable. Hayato parted with his grandmother after an argument, and seems like a heartless businessman nowadays, but his heart begins to soften. I felt a sort of deja-vu at one point--haven't I already seen this premise somewhere?--but with time that wore off and this situation seemed original enough. At least one girl, Aya (dark blue hair) belongs to some sort of band as well (Ouka=red, Kiku=green, Riho=blond with pigtails, Akane=blond with short hair). This show seems amusing and the plot is interesting enough that I'm on board for now. However, I found that in succeeding episodes the initial novelty has largely worn off. I wasn't laughing much (though there was a good deal of fanservice), and the stakes behind success or failure for this reopened cafe didn't seem all that high. Maybe we haven't gotten to know the characters well enough--there are no less than five girls, after all. I'm an introvert and have a hard time keeping track of the names and traits of characters that don't leap out and grab me, and these don't. I decided to play it safe by not watching immediately but saving the series on a DVD. Last updated Saturday, October 07 2023. Created Monday, April 24 2023. |
