Violet Evergarden, this film explores our titular character attempting to compose letters for a seriously ill boy and trying to locate her missing superior officer whom she discovers is still alive. The film attempts to latch on the angle of things changing as advances in technology such as telephones are leading Auto Memory Dolls to become obsolete in their purposes and the lives of those Violet had as clients changing along with them. Problem is that while the stories in themselves are decent, have to admit this film felt largely pointless in what it was attempting to accomplish with juggling three different plots as besides the two involving Violet, the third involves the granddaughter of one of Violet's past clients curious about her about 50 years in the future. The granddaughter sub-plot adds little to the story and Violet's side-story with helping the ill child felt more at home as an episode of the TV anime. The major hook of the film involving Violet's search for her superior officer is perhaps the biggest letdown for the series as a whole considering how cliched the overblown drama is with building up the two for having their "big moment" and feeling like the film was padding out its run time at points, especially with it running for over 2 hours long and seemingly using the other two sub-plots to drag things out. In short, this is one of the more disappointing titles I've seen serving as a conclusion to one of the recent anime franchises I've taken a liking to with how much the film was attempting to cram in and also drag out. A definite letdown for me, for sure.
