I needed to use the ANN synopsis to create this page because episode one doesn't lay out the basic premise all that well. There was no mention of the date, that the enemy were 'alien invaders', that mankind was 'on the brink of extinction', etc, etc. What we get is a mission by Android 2B (B = 'Battler') and 9S (S = 'Scanner'). She looks like a hot girl with a gothic outfit. Both wear blindfolds for some reason. They use a mix of heavy weaponry and computer hacking to accomplish their goal. Will this show be about android romance, perhaps? 9S says it has been a good while since he has talked to anyone. She feels 'despair at the bleak future', at least for a moment. It is mentioned that they are 'forbidden from holding emotions', yet it seems they can. These two must be fighting for humanity ("Glory to Mankind!" they declare at one point). This show makes no secret of the fact that it is based on a video game. Episode one consists largely of action but I would have preferred a better explanation of the premise and getting to know 2B and 9S better. As things are, episode one doesn't really tell us all that much and I guess I will need to watch some more to get an idea of whether this show is any good or not.

Episode two lays out the scenario: humans retreated to the moon and space bases that orbit it a couple of centuries ago but are now trying to retake the earth. These YoRHa androids are the secret weapon on which they have pinned their hopes. We see that some of the enemy (who are shaped in an oddly unthreatening, almost comical manner) have developed a degree of artificial intelligence and don't want to fight anymore. They've gone from red-eye mode (combative) to yellow-eye (curious). 2B and 9S are sent to help a group of human (I assume) guerillas fighting on earth. These folks seem to feel that they aren't getting all the help they could be getting from those on the moon bases. What with all the time spent on mellowing aliens and revealing the premise, there wasn't much to get to know 2B and 9S better, which was sort of disappointing. I still cannot say whether this show will be very good.

Something weird is going on among the enemy, but that seems like good news to me and thereby not exactly the sort of thing that builds the conflict that any drama needs. I remain confused and not terribly excited by the direction this show is going. I had thought maybe a steamy android romance would develop between 2B and 9S, but no, they seem intent on just carrying out their mission. The closest thing to romance in episode 3 was 2B telling 9S he need not use honorifics when addressing her. Many of the tubby, nondescript enemy robots have abandoned their mission to conquer the Earth and are just trying to enjoy themselves, basically. But another type may be evolving so rapidly that the YoRHa androids may be rendered helpless against them; the first two are designated 'Adam' and 'Eve', apparently. New episodes of this series lagged several weeks behind those of most anime of the season.
