Kyo Sohma has been plagued by guilt since he allowed Kyoko Honda, a woman he'd known as a young child, to die in order to avoid exposing his curse. Somehow, against all odds, he met her daughter Tohru, and the two fell in love. But before there was Kyo and Tohru, or even Kyo and Kyoko, there was Kyoko and Katsuya. Kyoko was a troubled teen; Katsuya a student teacher with no actual interest in education. Apart, they were a pair of misfits; together, they made Tohru.

This prequel to the three TV anime seasons of the Fruits Basket reboot is meant to explore the past of Tohru's deceased mother, Kyoko, and how she met and married her husband, Katsuya. I would at least say if you hate recaps, you'd be better off skipping past the first 32 minutes of this film as it's largely a retelling of the events of the TV seasons seen through Kyo's perspective. Beyond that point, Prelude explores Kyoko's rough past as a delinquent and how meeting Katsuya changed both of them for the better due to both feeling daunted by the pressures and expectations of Japanese society, exploring Kyoko's past from middle school up to her coping with Katsuya's sudden passing. These scenes have enough time to explore both characters and convincingly show the love they develop for one another, though the age gap between the two may ruffle some feathers especially with Kyoko being a minor throughout a good chunk of this film. Outside of the recap with Kyo and exploring Kyoko and Katsuya's relationship, Prelude also includes some new scenes animated exclusively for this film, though they're largely fluff for Fruits Basket fans and add nothing new to the series as a whole. In short, this film's largely worth seeing only for it finally adapting Kyoko's back story from the manga and what's offered up is still worth checking out since Kyoko's character was an influential one on the developments of several characters throughout the series outside of just Tohru and Kyo.
