Words and music bridge the gap between Cherry, a boy who is terrible at communicating with other people, and Smile, a girl who hides behind a mask. They meet in a mundane suburban shopping mall in a provincial city. Cherry always wears headphones and puts the feelings he cannot utter into his hobby, Japanese haiku poems. Smile always wears a mask to conceal her large front teeth, for which she has dental braces. As a popular video star, she streams a video about seeking "cuteness."

The premise for Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop will be familiar territory for fans of romance titles in its focus on two socially awkward teens coming together to form a relationship with Cherry and Smile. But for a familiar story, the development of it is pretty engaging in exploring the titular characters learning to gradually break out of their shy shells as they interact with one another throughout the movie's run and deal with their personal issues with Cherry's inability to properly express himself and Smile being self-conscious about her large front teeth she hides behind a face mask while in public.

Another plot element in the film involves the search for a lost music record that Smile and Cherry undertake for an elderly man they become acquainted with through a senior community club they volunteer at. Outside the romance element with our main pair of characters, this angle of the story also provides its own interesting developments in it is an uncommon element with many modern anime titles to pay respect to the past as many anime aim more to appeal to modern cultural elements to draw in audiences and this gets some notable focus with Cherry's interest in composing haiku poetry mixed with hip hop music.

In short, I enjoyed watching through Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop thanks to its mix of romance development involving its main pair of shy high schoolers learning to break away from their shyness and the film's major theme of learning to value past traditions. I do think there may be a cultural barrier to a degree with this film given its nods to elements of Japanese culture. But I'd still at least recommend checking it out at least once.
