Kotogawa is an eccentric, reticent 41-year-old taxi driver who has no relatives and does not have much to do with others. He does have conversations with his customers, including a college student who wants to go viral, a nurse hiding a secret, an unsuccessful comedian, a street rough, and an up-and-coming idol. These conversations lead him to a girl who has disappeared.

(One episode watched):

I used the ANN synopsis above because it's instructive in an unintended way. At no point does it mention that the characters in this anime are animals. Kotogawa is a walrus, for example. After watching episode one I didn't understand why animals were being used. This show begs comparison with Beastars, another recent anime with intelligent animals substituting for humans. Except in Beastars the conflict between predators and prey was an important element, so the use of animals made perfect sense. And Odd Taxi struck me as an unusually complex and sophisticated story of a person getting entangled in crime, and probably would have worked just fine with conventional characters. So, the use of animals almost seems like a mere distraction here. But the general quality otherwise demands that I continue to watch, so I will.
