Upon entering university, Hinako moves to a coastal town. She loves surfing, and when she's on the waves she's fearless, but still feels uncertain about her future. When a fire wreaks havoc in the town, Hinako encounters the young firefighter Minato. As they surf and spend more time together, Hinako feels drawn to someone like Minato who devotes himself to helping other people. Hinako also holds a special place in Minato's heart, and when he suddenly drowns while out surfing alone, he comes back to her as a ghost trapped in water. As everyone else gets over Minato's death and tries to move on, Hinako comes to depend on his spirit.

Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara
Ride Your Wave's premise is one that fans of romance dramas may be familiar with in its dabbling into coping with personal loss in its focus on Hinako able to interact with the spirit of her dead lover, Minato, whenever she sings a certain song near water. But the storytelling is still great to see as the film explores enough of their relationship to have you care for them and connect with Hinako's struggles for learning to move on from her boyfriend's loss. The film makes great use of its animation to animate a number of elaborate sequences with water during scenes where Hinako is interacting with Minato's spirit, notably while Hinako is surfing and during a later scene while Hinako is being rescued during a building fire. The film doesn't necessarily break new ground as the storytelling can come off as predictable to those who have seen films with similar premises like this. But the film does well at conveying its storytelling and having you care for its lead characters, and I'd at least recommend fans of romance anime view it at least once.
