Hime Goto has little idea what sort of a job her father holds, just that it must be prestigious since he leaves home each morning in a suit. The truth is that Kakushi Goto is a highly popular writer/illustrator of dirty manga, and has sought to keep that a secret from his daughter since the day she was born.

Kakushigoto depicts a successful mangaka of ecchi titles attempting to hide this secret from his 10-year old daughter as a single father. Uniquely, this plot is also mixed with a side-plot eight years in the future where Hime, as a teen, is trying to discover her father's secret while left in some sort of serious medical condition. While I concede the title's focus on Hime and Kakushi's bond has its touching moments with the latter trying to raise his daughter widowed, the humor otherwise focused on his profession and his exaggerated reactions to guard his secret largely fell flat for me. I realize this series is from the same creator of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and I recognize some of the familiar elements of exaggerated character humor that are in both titles. While I slightly prefer Kakushigoto over Zetsubou Sensei, that isn't really saying much as the focus on Hime and Kakushi's family bond is the only thing that had me caring much for the series.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:3835#628]
(Two episodes watched):

The realistic background art which I saw in the opening moments of Kakushigoto encouraged me, because such effort is usually only invested in shows with detailed and interesting characters and plot. The mention of the manga trade raised my hopes as well; maybe this would be something vaguely like Bakuman. But it soon became clear that character designs are pretty simple, and a simple chardesign is almost always indicative of a simple character. Sure enough, this show turned out to be about 4-koma type jokes rather than any sort of story or drama. And, as usual, the jokes were about as funny as the ones you read in the newspaper. It doesn't look like there's going to be any sort of noteworthy plot, just corny, overdone jokes. I don't sense any sign that the personalities of the characters will change in any significant way as this story progresses, and I have better things to do than listen to weak jokes. Basically, this strikes me as a waste of a show. If a series about a mangakka had inserted even a half-assed plot and was a fraction as good as Bakuman, I would have gladly watched it. But the signs are that this show will be content to fool around with things like 'Great Balls of Fury' and the race to keep the naive Hime from catching on to her father's occupation. It was probably foolish of me to hope for as much as I did, but whatever the case may be I was already getting tired of this premise before episode one was finished.

I was surprised to read that the author of Kakushigoto was also the author of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, which I recall was fun, so I watched another episode. Taking a closer look at it, I did notice some simularities; it would seem that this show is trying to do the same as SZS, namely tell jokes without having a overriding plot. Episode two didn't offend me as much as episode one had, since it was less about the cheap porn, but it didn't seem as good as I remembered SZS being either. In fact, if I remember correctly, only once did I laugh out loud at a joke. But my standards for what is funny enough to actually laugh at must be far higher than those of the average person, so I wouldn't be surprised if many people are quite satisfied with this show. As for me, however, I decided to dispense with Kakushigoto.
