This was a strange one. A mysterious giraffe runs a secret stage audition where several girls in a music academy compete against one another in stage battles, competing for the prize of Top Star for whoever is able to win against all the other performers. At least from what I could follow, a number of elements within Revue Starlight are metaphorical symbols of the plot and characters, with more about the mysterious competition and the motives of the characters within the auditions revealed as episodes progress. The characters all have their typical anime character types, but enough is fleshed out with them to explore their relations to others and the motives they have to strive for Top Star, even if the motives may be nothing out of the ordinary you may have seen from other anime titles. Considering the cast is all made of girls and inspired by Japan's Takarazuka Revue for its performance style, there are strong implications that the close friendships between pairs of girls within the series are beyond friendship and there is a good deal of teasing alluding to this at points throughout Revue Starlight. Pretty much, I applaud Revue Starlight for trying to be different from the norm with its bizarre premise and solid plot and character exploration, even though a good chunk of this is a bit on the familiar side as some of its visual and storytelling aesthetics reminded me of Revolutionary Girl Utena yet not doing quite enough to make its own identity. Still, I would at least recommend checking it out at least once to draw your own conclusions on whether or not Revue Starlight is a unique experience for you or not.
