Uchuu Senkan Tiramisu Zwei
(All episodes watched):
The second season of Tiramisu in Fall 2018 begins where the first one left off, with Subaru and his evil brother Isuzu (notice the trend of naming characters after auto brands?) stranded on earth where they crashlanded. The episode swiftly goes from Isuzu almost being shot by earth security forces to the two of them loading up with souvenirs in a gift shop. The quality seems unchanged, which is a relief. This show is on a completely different and higher level than most anime comedy. Most shows pretty much aim for the lowest level, so as not to leave anyone behind, but that makes their comedy weak and unremarkable. In contrast, the sophisticated comedy of this show flatters me. It is clearly written for people who already know a good deal about mecha anime, because otherwise you wouldn't 'get' many of the jokes. The brilliance of this show is that it takes mecha stereotypes and, instead of giving you what you expect, it goes off in unexpected and hilarious directions. I think my favorite episode may be the one where a female MS pilot meets Isuzu in a bar, and he doesn't exactly behave like we would expect a stereotypical dark hero to. Character designs are highly detailed rather than the simplistic ones that you normally get in comedy anime; that's sort of a joke in itself. I noticed at one point that I did more laughing while watching this short than I did during a 23 minute episode of another anime comedy. It is without doubt the funniest show airing this season. Not just a number of modest jokes, as is often the case, but several 'killer' ones in each episode. Before watching the final episode, I said to myself 'This is gonna be good', because this show always is.
