original film, Project A-Ko 2 rehashes a number of the parodies from the first film as A-Ko and C-Ko find themselves crossing paths with B-Ko's father trying to get his hands on the spaceship from the aliens that tried abducting C-Ko from the last film. It did have some moments that had me chuckling, particularly whenever A-Ko was wrecking stuff with her superhuman abilities and the cameo from her parents at the start of the film. But otherwise, the second Project A-Ko entry felt kind of hit-and-miss for me compared to the first film and is still more a treat for fans of 80s anime. Do have access to the remaining two A-Ko films via the Retro Crush app. So likely to get around to seeing them at some point on my Android phone.

OK, I have to admit that I enjoyed this on more than the original Project A-Ko on many levels. Things looked cleaner as far as art and animation to me, and the story was silly, but did make me laugh a few times. Yeah, A-Ko's "I'm late for school" routine is old, but it was still funny to me. As to the story, the shoujo-ai/yuri undercurrent is still there with B-Ko's obsession with C-Ko. At one point in her fight with A-Ko, B-Ko says the winner gets to take C-Ko out on a date. Yet this is only an undercurrent and really doesn't do much beyond fuel the ongoing battle between A-Ko and B-Ko and that's funny stuff. As others have stated, there are parodies in this anime, much as there was in the Project A-Ko movie. So if you are versed in old-school anime (prior to 1987) and know your anime history (such as titles currently being made at the time), your enjoyment will go up. However, even without this knowledge, this OAV is still enjoyable due to the fact that it doesn't take itself very seriously. Bottom line: An enjoyable sequel to the original Project A-Ko movie.Last updated Wednesday, January 12 2005. Created Wednesday, January 12 2005. |

Dirty Pair. There certainly was a lot of "gender bending" (if that's the right term) going on (just as in the first movie). My favorite moment came when Mr. Daitokuji tore off his suit and revealed the outfit he was wearing underneath. Although my tape had a length of 70 minutes listed, I think that must have included around 17 minutes worth of trailers, a scene that was deleted, and a live-action music video, which would mean the movie had an overall length of less than an hour (one criticism I read on another website was that the plot development was too rushed). In short, if you are a Project A-Ko fanatic, you'll probably be delighted with this OAV, but if you're anything less you are liable to see this as largely the same jokes retold yet again. I hear that whether you like it or not, you will need to see A-Ko 2 in order to fully understand the other two sequels, which are supposed to be somewhat better. P.S: As of 3/08 I've put this one on my "rewatch" list, hoping that another four-and-a-half years of anime experience will cause it to make more sense to me. 9/03 #67 Last updated Tuesday, March 11 2008. Personally, I found this sequel to be disappointing and felt it wasn't as good as the original movie. I must admit I know little about the contemporary anime it was making fun of, so I didn't "get" a lot of the jokes. I think the only tie-in to another series which I recognized came when I spotted what I think were the ||||||||

Project A-Ko 2 is far and away the best of the A-Ko series. The writing is witty, the plot is engaging in a silly way, and the characters start to develop a bit. What looks at first like a mere rehash of the first movie surprisingly turns into a nice little sequal that both continues the storyline from the first one and manages to stand alone rather well. The animation quality is roughly the same, and the character designs are the same, though tweaked ever so slightly. There is a hint of modernization in them. We learn a bit more about B-Ko and can kind of see where she gets her freakiness, and she becomes a little less two-dimensional. A-Ko does little evolving here, and C-Ko is just as irritating as before. What makes this show better than the first is the parodies, though. By this point, giant robots were on a rebound in Japan, and the show pokes fun at Gundam, Voltron, and their like. When the entire Graviton City mobilizes in Gotchaman-esque superhero costumes I laughed aloud. The funniest moment of the show occurs when B-Ko's father attempts to catch the falling alien ship. Oh. My. I won't say what happens, but rest assured, hilarity ensues. I laughed maniacally out of shock and amusement. Overall, this sequal surpasses the origional by a tad, and if you've got the money it's well worth picking up (though I suppose you'd have to pick up the first one then, too, huh?) The parodies work better in this one, and the gags fly furiously. Project A-Ko 2 was funny and entertaining. 11-9-01 Last updated Friday, November 09 2001. Created Friday, November 09 2001. |
