Tsuki ga Kirei is a romantic light drama focused on the developing relationship between our leads Kotaro and Akemi, and the occasional complications that arise out of it thanks to their friends having their own romantic developments with one of the leads. You could think of the series as part romance and part coming-of-age title as Tsuki ga Kirei does a great job in exploring the gradual developments in Kotaro and Akemi's relationship where they eventually become a couple and go through some of the typical tribulations of being a couple such as their first date, first kiss, and learning to be committed to one another. At the same time, both are inexperienced at being in a relationship and the romantic aspirations of their two close friends occasionally come in to complicate their romantic developments, especially with Akemi being self-conscious about it and the two choosing not to acknowledge their relationship to others. Outside of the relationship, Tsuki ga Kirei also takes the time to explore the family live and interests that our two leads partake in with Kotaro being an aspiring writer and participates in traditional dance festivals, while Akemi is on the school's track and field club. Overall, this was a rather strong romance title thanks to its well-done utilization of light drama and coming-of-age tribulations that it brought along for Kotaro and Akemi, and is easily among one of the year's best titles for me thus far.

Well, perhaps the problem I had with this show was that even after watching the first episode, the basic premise which is spelled out in the synopsis above came as news to me. I had noted that Akane is on the track team and that Kotarou seemed to be a librarian or something, but the notion that this disparity between their athletic and intellectual outlooks would pose a problem had never been mentioned and had never occurred to me. It just seemed like a case of love at first sight, even though the two lovers hadn't realized it themselves yet. So, the story seemed to be moving rather slowly to me and hadn't shown much sign of any problem which might interfere with the budding romance. And, needless to say, 'people and situations around them' had yet to make it any more difficult since it had barely begun. Episode one did not excite me, with the result that I had a hard time paying close attention and keeping track of things which might matter later on. Nowadays, any show which doesn't grab my attention in the very first episode is liable to be dropped from my viewing schedule, and that was the fate of Tsuki ga Kirei.
