Monogatari Series: Second Season and helps to provide more fleshing out of him and Shinobu. The first half of the series explores more about Ougi Oshino, who is hinted to have a mysterious connection of sorts to Araragi with how much she knows of his past. Unfortunately, things with her character are left unresolved as viewers are still left wondering how she knows quite a bit about Araragi. The second half of the series is where Shinobu gets quite a bit of fleshing out when an old servant of hers is trying to slay her and Araragi out of revenge and our duo try to reestablish their link after it was severed during the events of Shinobu Time. Beyond that, the show maintains many of the Monogatari franchise's trademarks like long discussions between characters, Araragi's perverted antics, the unique artwork style compliments of Shaft and Araragi's group dealing with various oddities. If you've been watching the Monogatari franchise up to this point, Owarimonogatari is a definite recommendation to continue on with the franchise.

The -monogatari series of anime must be highly popular in Japan, judging from how many there have been, but for an American this series seems to do about everything it can to make understanding and enjoying it's various incarnations about as difficult as possible. I have to continually pause the video in order to avoid missing parts of the profuse subtitled dialogue, which spoils whatever timing there is to the jokes and keeps me from being able to pay much attention to the symbolic imagery (not that I would ever understand it even if wasn't distracted at all). Information overload, basically. They are highly confusing, not terribly funny, and the theme of the supernatural doesn't thrill me all that much. Basically, the concentration that these shows demand is out of proportion to the entertainment they deliver in exchange. I don't want to be too hard on them, since they are clearly trying to do a noteworthy job while many anime are hardly trying to do anything at all. But perhaps the lesson is that it's possible to try too hard. Last updated Wednesday, October 07 2015. Created Wednesday, October 07 2015. |
