Jinsei's whole gimmick is played out like a manzai routine in its focus on a life consulting section of the school newspaper club with Akamatsu serving as the "straight man" to the three other girls of the club who have their exaggerated character types representing different school clubs. Many episodes feature the group given a question to answer from a member of the school body, undergoing nonsensical acts to get answers for it, and eventually coming to a consensus on a solution to the question when publishing their newspaper section. The series also has its fair share of fan service and suggestive moments coming from the antics of the cast. The series also has a side plot where the newspaper club comes at odds with the student council president to attempt giving it some diverse focus and prevent things from getting too repetitive with its humor. But I must admit I was largely indifferent to the humor offered up with Jinsei since it largely felt like a one-trick pony with its act to a great degree for me. But like other comedies of its ilk, your mileage is likely to vary on whether or not you enjoy its style of humor.

(All episodes watched):

This was a show whose first episode didn't stir any strong feelings within me, positive or negative, so I watched a second one. One thought that episode one did bring to mind was that while it had the usual cheap fanservice at one point, it also had fairly funny jokes in another. Episode two confirms that impression: too much infantile boob fondling crap, but some decent humor nonetheless. In fact, I bet the jokes in this show are good enough that it could have gotten by without the fairly explicit fanservice, which only cheapens it. There's a fair amount of fanservice, but the show doesn't wallow in it like more than a few offensive others do; the jokes, not boobs and panties, are the primary means of this show attracting viewers. So, I decided to watch.

Episode three reinforced those earlier impressions. In fact, the quality of the comedy seemed to be growing while the amount of fanservice seemed to be shrinking (if that wasn't just wishful thinking on my part). This is a fairly amusing show which I looked modestly forward to watching. Episode four even contained a LOL joke. Another joke, which didn't crack me up but was notable anyhow, was in episode six where the girls seem to have some sort of obsessive need to offer advice even to strangers who haven't directly asked for it. That was more clever than the generic jokes that we usually get in anime. The one-guy-and-three-girls-in-a-club premise sort of reminds me of Seitokai Ichizon and while Jinsei will never be as good as that one, it's definitely at least average and perhaps a bit above. I wouldn't really call this a harem since Yuki doesn't seem particularly horny and there seems to be little chance of more than one girl being attracted to him.

Some episodes seemed to crawl and get tiresome, while others maintained a decent pace and kept me laughing or at least smiling. An example of the latter would be number ten, where the team must solve the problems of three incorrigibly negative thinkers. Each is bizarre in their own way, but so are the 2nd Newspaper Club members, after all. Episode eleven had an LOL moment for me when we see an artist's impression of what Yuki would look like while hiding porn. The conclusion was OK, with at least an attempt being made to provide a complete wrap-up of the show. Anime comedies are seldom brilliant, so the bar is pretty low, but Jinsei nevertheless managed to be the best one of its season, I thought.
