When Dr. Eggman (Robotnik in the US version) holds the president and his daughter hostage, Sonic must comply to the evil scientist's demand of going to Eggmanland to stop Black Eggman and deactivate the city's generator before it reaches critical mass. Little does Sonic know that it's a trap to activate Hyper Metal Sonic, a robot counterpart built by Eggman to destroy our hero.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic's yet another case of an anime being used to promote a popular video game series. The plot's barebones and just an excuse to feature the long and dragged out battle between Sonic and Metal Sonic in the second half of the film. It takes a number of liberties with the source material for failed attempts at humor or seriousness, from Knuckles being capable of flight to Metal Sonic literally thinking like Sonic. Speaking of liberties, there are a number of points in the OVA where Sonic's character behaves like a jerk in his treatment of others and usually having no regard for their safety. The visual quality for this is quite underwhelming with subpar designs of scenery and characters, washed-out color and a nice number of animation shortcuts implemented. Also, the English dub for this is quite obnoxious with Tails sounding like a sick 4-year old, Knuckles sounding Australian and Sonic sounding like a mix of British and snooty jerk. Overall, this is a rather forgettable OVA made more to cash a quick buck off fans of Sonic the Hedgehog than making any kind of effort at an engaging title.
