Having enjoyed Haiyore! Nyaruko-san a great deal, I was looking forward to this sequel series. Fortunately, it doesn't let down on the whacky comedy aspects, nor the massive parody references here. At the same time, it actually manages to do some rather unique things in romantic comedy series.

On the comedy front, if you don't like insane, whacky humor, you probably won't like this series too much. Me, I tend to love the stuff, being a consumer of whacky British comedy series. Sometimes the comedy is slapstick, but mostly it runs a wide gambit of comedy aspects popular in Japan. I rather enjoyed the sudden, unexpected things that would happen from time to time as I find the unexpected to be the funniest stuff there is.

On the parody front, the series primarily draws from Japanese sources. Many of the parody references I didn't get, since Kamen Rider seems to be the franchise that gets parodied the most. However, if you've seen a lot of anime or read a lot of manga, you'll get more of the references, ranging from Azumanga Daioh (TV) to Shin Seiki Evangelion to Tenchi Muyou! Ryououki to Cardcaptor Sakura to Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV), and that's just scratching the surface. Western movies and the like, such as Full Metal Jacket, Men in Black and some other popular movies get parody nods as well. Heck, this series actually started with an awesome parody of the animated Bewitched OP sequence for that classic American sitcom. Sadly, it seems that the Japanese may be better versed on Bewitched than their American counterparts, but that's another issue.

The series continues to be quite ecchi at times, going well into the "not safe for work" category. This was one problem I had with the series. I can just do without seeing Nyarlko or Cthuko strategically naked (meaning their naughty bits are covered), and I could do without the sexual jokes and references as well.

The worst part of the series comes from it sometimes drifting into the creepy area. This included a scene when Cthuko's adult cousin Cthune stops by to visit and immediately molests Cthuko in the entryway of the lead character's home. Another creepy moment came from Mahiro's mother coming onto him sexually while under the influence of a love potion. There'd always been mild hints of that from time to time, but this was just over the line. I'm sure the production team did it as part of their whacky, insane comedy stuff, but I didn't need that kind of "funny".

The unexpected part of the series came from the character growth seen. Since this series is based off the light novels, I suspect that the character growth aspects are picked up from there. Regardless, it was nice to see Mahiro be much more tolerant of his alien housemates, and much more accepting of Nyarlko's massive affection and love for him. Nyarlko, who's always been way to clingy, manages to grow and restrain herself at times, just enjoying being in the same room as Mahiro. Knowing Nyarlko would love to always be in Mahiro's arms, I found myself feeling for Nyarlko and wanting to slap Mahiro upside the head since it is clear he has feelings for Nyarlko, even if he doesn't like admitting it.

The biggest surprise in character growth came from Cthuko. She'd always been obsessive of Nyarlko and was often jealous of Mahiro being closer to her. While she still wants to be closer to Nyarlko, she comes to respect then love Mahiro. While this might be expected in a harem series, I liked it because it comes off naturally. Plus, it is kind of humorous to have her wanting Mahiro to have her baby while she has Nyarlko's, which of course is all impossible.

In the end, the negatives of the excessive fan service and ecchi content didn't dampen my enjoyment of this series. I found myself eagerly looking forward to each episode every week to get a big grin at the very least. Since the light novels are still being published, I'm hoping we have another series in the future.
