Haiyore! Nyaruko-san and Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W, this OVA series does the usual things you'd expect from this franchise -- whacky comedy, parodies, and other insanity. Good times. While I've not watched Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV), I did get the parody reference to this dark, mahou shoujo series. I'm guessing this would have been funnier had I actually watched the series, but it was amusing enough as it was. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the sweet and light Cardcaptor Sakura gets parodied as Nyarlko is schooled in the proper way to be a magic girl. The other major mahou shoujo title to be parodied by this episode was Futari wa Pretty Cure, which is another franchise I'm aware of but haven't seen. Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon gets a nod as well. There may be other mahou shoujo parody references, but that's all I was personally aware of. On the American parody front, we get parodies of Full Metal Panic and Men in Black, both of which were pretty awesome since I like both movies. Of course, all of this is done in the normal, whacky style the Haiyore! franchise is known for. Following that insanity, the episode becomes more violent and a bit gory as Nyarlko dispatches her enemy in an all new way -- insane viciousness with a cute magic girl smile. ^_^; Overall, this was a pretty good parody, poking fun at the mahou shoujo genre. It isn't on par with Dai Mahou Touge, but it is still good, more so if you are a fan of the Haiyore! franchise. Last updated Tuesday, July 02 2013. Created Tuesday, July 02 2013. |
