Serving as a prelude to the 110 episode epic space opera, this chapter of LoGH reveals how Reinhard and Yang came to first cross blows with one another on the battlefield in the long running war between the Galactic Empire and Free Planets Alliance. The major elements you would expect with prominent members of the Free Planets Alliance and Galactic Empire are retained here from Yang's carefree attitude and interest in history to Reinhard putting up with prejudice from Imperial officers over the means in which he rose through the military's ranks. Noticeably, emotions from the characters looked quite subdued for this OVA at points as Reinhard didn't have his trademark disgust over insults for his sister and the Empire's policies nor Yang being dumbfounded over his present situation in the military. Character designs for this OVA looked somewhat rough compared to the early episodes of the main LoGH series, though animation sequences with spaceship battles looked better polished. Classical musical pieces are used to accompany many of the scenes and battles throughout the OVA which are decent, but not up to par with the orchestral scores you would find within the main series. Regardless, this OVA is still a definite look for new and seasoned fans of LoGH as Reinhard and Yang's first major encounters with one another serve to be the starting point of their heated rivalry throughout much of the main series for LoGH.
