Essentially, Urban Square is supposed to be a parody of sorts with crime film noir movies considering our male lead, Ryou, is a screenplay writer of crime thrillers and gets confronted with the cliches he normally writes up when dealing with thugs connected to an illegal antique ring which he often points out in hostile situations with the thugs and finds himself playing "action hero" in the ensuing mess. The movie is loaded with your typical elements of the genre with the police helpless to do anything, one cop willing to take matters in his own hands to handle the crime ring and a love interest for the writer who also gets involved in the mess. Urban Square's style of humor it was implementing with Ryo's involvement with the crime ring isn't my cup of tea for humor, but I can give it props for trying something unique with its comedy. The visuals to the OVA are well-detailed with drab colors for scenery and character designs, though they certainly show their age considering this is a mid-80s anime. Urban Square's soundtrack includes some catchy jazz tracks that come up occasionally as otherwise, all the other insert music I listened to throughout the OVA was rather forgettable. Otherwise, there isn't much else to be said here. It's doubtful I'll be watching Urban Square a second time thanks to its style of humor and short length. But if you are looking for an anime parody that is well aware of what it is poking fun of and have interest in older anime titles, then Urban Square may be for you.
