I don't know exactly what the definition of a 'grimoire' is, but the message that pops into my head whenever the word appears in a new anime is 'crappy, uninteresting, poor man's magical combat series'. I got that vibe within a minute or two of the beginning of Campione. This seems like a magic-for-magic's-sake show, with a gibberish of fancy terminology, but nevertheless is completely boring. It tries to create a mystique of the supernatural, by cut-and-pasting ancient western mythologies together ('Prometheus!'). But the result is an uninteresting, confusing, nonsensical mess, and nothing can save the show from the fact that it is just plain dull. It reminds me of Asura Cryin'. Just because a show includes 'magic' doesn't automatically make it a winner. Perhaps because the characters are in magical action before we have a chance to get to know them in any way, I couldn't care less which way the opening round of fights went. They seem like mass produced cookie-cutter characters without anything whatsoever to sell them; they weren't even all that great the last time I saw them, in some other series. This show was clearly going nowhere, and around nine minutes' worth was more than enough to convince me to give up and watch something else.

I read a claim that this episode ended with an awesome battle scene, so I decided to watch the reaminder of it. After a boner-provoking scene in which the protagonist finds himself trapped in a room with a drunk and scantily clad girl, the fight came along. To a certain extent, it was good--because for once rather than just the usual mix of pluck and luck, the guy turns out to have some truly ass-kicking special powers which he was previously unaware of, which causes a transformation of his personality to take place. But that still doesn't make the series as a whole worth the time required to watch it, and I was confident that passing on Campione was the right move for me.
