Medaka Box starts out like many typical high school based anime with its focus on the seemingly perfect Medaka using her student council position to help other students with their problems in a number of arcs. It tackles the mold typical of many shounen demographic anime with its character types, situations, and resolutions being resolved by the seemingly perfect Medaka. However, the series is somewhat redeemed in a later arc that deconstructs the flaws to Medaka's perfect persona when confronted by an enemy threat and helps provide the series with some decent fleshing out and leaving things open-ended for events to come with members of the mysterious Class 13. Whether or not this would get me to see the show's sequel, Medaka Box Abnormal, remains to be seen in time. But for now, I'm in no rush to see it since the majority of the series is otherwise cookie-cutter shounen high school anime.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2550#628]
(Part of one episode watched):

There's a definite subgenre in anime composed of comedies which deal with student councils, or Seitokai--see also Gokujou Seitokai, Seitokai no Ichizon, and Seitokai Yakuindomo. This show seems most similar to the latter, since we are shown a splendid set of knockers before we see anyone's face. Medaka Box seems to be trying to be a mix of comedy and action, since Kurokami Medaka gets into two semi-serious fights with delinquents during episode one, and wins hands down. The problem is that this show is neither funny nor exciting. I don't think I did more than smile a couple of times (never laughed outright), and could only groan at Medaka's superhuman fighting skills. Is this supposed to be cool? The unflappable Medaka is too good at everything to be true, indeed her only fault is perfectionism. But I don't want to watch a show about someone who is infinitely superior to me. Perfection is boring; a character has to have some sort of fault in order for the viewer to identify with him/her. The characters in general have no souls and I could not care less about them. I fast-forwarded through the last third of the show to see if anything of interest would happen, but it didn't. This strikes me as a poor man's Seitokai series; there's no way I will trade 23 precious minutes of my time for this stuff. Go watch Seitokai no Ichizon, or, if you already have, watch it again. It will be better than this.
