(One OVA watched):

The character designs seem to have changed since the original series. I'm not sure I remember everyone, like the sword-wielding bodyguard woman. But this was fun nevertheless. It turned out to be three short stories: the first was semi-serious as the team deals with a terrorist attack on a fancy hotel. It was amusing but the plot wasn't all that deep: badguys attempt a slightly unusual assault, but are no match for the regular cast members of Kurenai. The fact that someone named 'Lucy May' is involved with the conspiracy, knows a cast member, and gets away unharmed led me to expect more of the same, but the other two stories were unrelated matters of comedy. That's OK with me, since the mystery of part one didn't 'wow' me, and the silly bits were my favorites parts of the TV series, too. For the most part, this might be described as a sort of goofy filler stuff which is presumably taking place after the compromise ending of the original series. Not steadily LOL funny, but reliably amusing and good for a outloud laugh here and there. So far, so good.

There must be more OVAs on the way, because number two provides yet another glimpse of Lucy May, but doesn't take us anywhere near a resolution of her involvement. I don't remember the female assasin (I think) Kirihiko--maybe she is a manga-only character. I thought the bit in which Murasaki decides to become a counselor for people with personal troubles (think harem) was good.

Think of these OAVs as an extra treat for those who enjoyed the 2008 anime and the manga/ light novel sources. Clearly, the OAV is basing itself more off the manga considering Lin's back as Murasaki's bodyguard, the appearance of Kirihiko and the subdued running gag of Shinkuro being stuck in an unwanted harem which is prevalent from the original source material. Rather than an ongoing plot, both of these OAV episodes are more a small vignette of several self-contained plots revolving around the characters of the series that either offer up some character depth or comedy where adult humor's a little more prevalent than the 2008 anime. The animation style's quite different as it has a more rough approach to the character designs compared to the TV series. Unless you're a big Kurenai fan, you won't be missing out on much with these OAV episodes.
