The memories of the First Love. Joon-Sang transfers to a high school in Chun-Chong where he looks for the identity of his real father. There he meets Yu-Jin whose likely character and similar single parent background attacts him. Though Yu-Jin already has a close male friend Sang-Yong, she believes that Jun-Sang is the first love that she has been waiting for. However, On New Year's Eve, while rushing to meet Yu-Jin, Joon-Sang meets an accident. 10 years later, Yu-Jin is now engaged to Sang-Hyuk. On their engagement night, Yu-Jin meets Min-Yeong whose exact resemblance to Jun-Sang startles her. She is even more taken back when she finds out that he is the boyfriend of her friend Chae Lin and also her client. From that moment on, all their love, friendships and relationships starts to take an unusual turn of fate...

This is an anime adaptation of the popular 2002 Korean live action romantic drama Winter Sonata (Gyeoul Yeonga). Original actors Bae Yong Jun and Choi Ji Woo will reprise their roles from the live action drama in the anime adaptation, so it does look like the series will air on Japanese television with Korean dialogue and Japanese subtitles.

[TV series, 2009-2010, 26 episodes + 1 "prologue" TV special, 25 min]

(Four episodes watched):

This was my first Korean work of anime. I could tell that the characters were speaking a language other than Japanese, even though I don't speak either Japanese or Korean. The music, at least early on, seemed to have a more western style--other than the lyrics, of course--than what is typical of Japanese anime. Character designs were well done and distinctive (their eyes were realistically sized!). I learned a few things about life in (South) Korea, like how authoritarian it seems to be relative to the US, and how unheard of it is for juveniles to talk back to adults. I felt slightly confused at first about what was going on plotwise, but the story was making some sense by the end of the episode. In all, I would describe this first episode as not enthralling, but it piques my interest, and I'll go along for awhile to see how the story shapes up.

"That's not supposed to happen"! That was my response to a startling event in episode four. Where will the story go from here? All of my expectations have been wiped away, and one thing I can say for this show is that I haven't the slightest idea what will happen next.
