The year is 1999 and Tokyo's Mobile Police have a new weapon in the war on crime--advanced robots called Labors are used to combat the criminals who would use the new technology for illegal means. The suicide of a mysterious man on the massive Babylon Project construction site sets off a cascade of events that may signal the destruction of Tokyo. What is the connection between the suicide, the new Mobile Police AV-XO Zero Labor, and a berserk prototype tank? When Patlabor cops Noah Izumi and Azuma Shinohara investigate an unexplained wave of rogue Labors' rampaging across the city, they uncover a sinister high-tech revenge plot.

Being the first piece of Patlabor I've had an opportunity of seeing, this was quite a good watch delivering on both the visual and plotting ends. The movie does a decent job mixing the regular banter between members of Section 2 (which I often found to be funny) and solving the mystery of the malfunctioning Labor robots. As more pieces of the mystery come to light, it leads to some interesting and shocking events for the squad to deal with in time for an upcoming typhoon about to hit Tokyo. It does quite well at keeping you hooked on the movie from start to finish. While not watching any other part of the franchise had me wondering just what kind of people the folks in Section 2 were, I was still able to grasp enough of what sort of future the series was trying to set up with man's dependence on machines and the role of Section 2 in dealing with issues related to Labors. For a late 1980s anime movie, Patlabor: The Movie was visually impressive with detailed and vast scenery with city landscapes, slick looking mecha designs from the worker and Section 2 Labors and fluid movement coming from battle scenes. Patlabor made for a worthwhile time killer for me thanks to the mystery it delves into and its impressive presentation for a 1980s anime. This has me tempted to see more from the series franchise anytime down the road.

Hated it the first time I saw it, loved it the second time I saw it. It's by Mamoori Oshii so it's his usual high standard of work with a deep plot with science and geography. The plot is very compeling and keeps you on the end of your seat.

I loved the enigmatic atmosphere with the whole E.Huba narrative and there is a part at the ending which I find very eerie and creepy.

Recommended to older audiences who like deep plots.

When I first saw this movie I had never seen the OVA series it is based on. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it. When I rewatched it yesterday I had become familiar with the charachters--I now know that Kanuka, for example, is a Patrol Labor pilot from New York who had trained with SVD2. I think that made the movie even more enjoyable. I found the ending, in particular, to be better than I remembered from the first viewing. Yes, it is a bit absurd that a civilian construction project should include a computer operated self-destruct system, but all in all this mystery was fairly plausible--and really fun.
The movie featured scenes in which a pair of detectives are accompanied by eerie music as they wander about the run-down districts of Tokyo in search of clues. They wonder if Hoba, the dead suspect, might have wanted them to follow this trail, so that they would see all the problems that have come along with rapid progress. "Where are we going? Who are we?" they ask themselves. The viewer of the movie can likewise ask his- or herself such philosophical questions, or just enjoy the mecha-action. Either way, quite an entertaining film.

My favorite line: Ota [to a labor gone wild]: "Attention Labor Pilot! Labor Police Division 2 is here to save you!"
Labor Pilot: "Division 2?! I'm Doomed!!"

More focus on story then on action. Its really good, and is the only real "mystery" anime I have seen. It is a fun movie to watch. I enjoyed it alot without having seen the tv show and wasn't confused. I would recommend not reading the back of the box before seeing the movie. I was glad I didn't because when I later read it, I saw it gave away the mystery. Go now and buy it.

This movie rocked. I had not seen any of the TV series before, but I was OK with it. I liked the characters and mech designs (although the open cockpits raised my eyebrows) and the story was good with only one plot hole that bugged me. Why would the builders of the ark incorporate a convenient self-destruct system?
Anyway, this was a good movie with very good animation. It reminded me alot of Ghost In the Shell, probably because it was directed by the same person.
While not the best mech show, it was certainly better than Gundam, and well worth the time taken to watch it. In fact, I'm off to buy it now.

Ok, there is a series before the movie, and maybe had I seen any of them I would of like this movie better.
However over all I think that this is a good movie. The director (Mamoru Oshii) is the same guy that did Ghost In the Shell. I would recommend this to most people, but I think that only fans of the original Patlabor series would truly get a kick out of this.
But I do think that the art work alone is enough to check this title out. (at the least)
