Follow the lives of five senior art students as they learn color theory and technique…and have some cute and colorful life lessons along the way. With full color illustrations scattered throughout, this series will teach the viewer some art basics as well. Art class was never this fun!

It’s Kisaragi’s first year in G.A.: the specialized art and design department at her high school. The timid Kisaragi has a lot to learn, but with the help of a very unique group of friends, even the most difficult lesson becomes loads of fun — if not downright silly! Based on a manga series in which you too can learn the basics of color theory and become a great artist yourself! Satoko Kiyuduki, creator of Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro, melds art class and manga in a whole new way!

This seems like a goofy show full of childlike hijinx, with plenty of kawaii but without any fanservice at all. That, and the art theme must have been what reminded me of Sketchbook Full Color's. The show seems to be composed of lots of brief jokes--I wondered if it might be based on a newspaper comic--and that reminded me of Lucky Star. There's not much of a longterm plot at all. I didn't get all the jokes and the confusion I felt could be tiresome. You do learn a good deal about art, and appropriately the artwork is pretty nice. Often time the characters are discussing different works of art and crack a joke here and there. My initial impression was of a show with lots of modest jokes and a few good ones. The number of laughs which the viewer gets relative to the time spent watching may sometimes be a little low, but the atmosphere of silliness is fun and I was generally looking forward to more of GA.

As much as I really want to enjoy this show (and do), it's not altogether easy. Sometimes it feels as if I must somehow struggle for my laughs, which mentally exhausts me and is frustrating. Sort of like, a good show that is so difficult to "get" that the confusion cancels out some of the fun--that's the best explanation I can come up with. I don't want to be too hard on GA, because all-in-all it really is fun and entertaining--there will just be some problems. Perhaps this is just the sort of show that doesn't "work" very well in subtitled mode--I noticed the same problem with Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. There's lots of dialogue and needing to continually pause to read subtitles sometimes spoils the timing of the jokes. Still, some episodes are better than others, and as the series went on it seemed to become easier to enjoy. In general, it was fun; I'll probably be rewatching it someday.
