Big Battle looks like it's set sometime near the end of the series considering Fyana is now with Chirico and Shako makes his presence felt aiding Chirico against Niva and the Balarants. The conflict between both parties make up the main conflict of this OVA and is solid to see unfold in its plotting, especially with Niwa bearing a grudge against past Red Shoulders. The large-scale battle at the end of the OVA makes for nice spectacle with Chirico's group taking on Niwa's massive war vehicle, though Chirico's planning against him does feel a bit too convenient with how he's able to deal with Niwa. Plus unlike Last Red Shoulder, I'm not sure if this has any plot relevance for the TV anime as I can't recall any particular storyline this would be connected to. Plotting issues aside, would still at least recommend Votoms fans check it out at least once for the spectacle of its climactic battle. Last updated Wednesday, April 08 2020. My favorite line: "Quit your yapping! If you die, you die!" --Cherokee Last updated Tuesday, February 03 2009. Created Tuesday, February 03 2009. |
When it comes to classic mecha series, some people are devoted to Macross/Robotech, others to Gundam, but my favorite is Votoms. And, with Big Battle, I believe I've finally seen it all. This story must take place fairly late in the TV series, since Shako is present. The climax involves an attack by Chirico and his friends on a mammoth mobile fortress (for the outcome of which bets have been placed), hence the title. Suffice to say that the plan would never work in reality, since there's far too much luck involved in this David vs. Goliath struggle, but it is fairly fun to watch seeing as it involves Chirico and all of his friends. These people obviously cannot get killed since this is just a spinoff of the main series, after all. They are all here, and the scheming between the greedy, opportunistic businessman Gotho and his old friend/rival Cherokee are amusing. I would say that only those who've seen Votoms and want more would be interested.||||||||
