A very powerful industrialist directs his daughter to pick a husband from three candidates he has chosen for her. They are to come into her life, and their uniqueness would cause her to recognize them immediately. All three of the candidates are outstanding. Well, it’s actually four... The story evolves along the lines of a power political mystery involving a small middle eastern country.

The manga was originally published as a two part story in 1987, then expanded into a longer series published from 1989 to 1994. Created by Natsumi Itsuki who is the author of a number of manga series including Jyu Oh Sei, Yakumo Tatsu (Eight Clouds Rising), and OZ, many of which have previously been adapted into anime.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2058#628]
(Two episodes watched):

My first impression was that this show is kind of neat. What's the deal, I was thinking, with this blunt and strong-willed girl who is unfamiliar with Japanese customs, has a bodyguard tracking her, once had a very exotic pet, and has never had a female friend of her own age? Kajika is called back to America to participate in a strange 'game', the object of which is to select her future husband. The trick is that Kajika won't know exactly who they are, and her suitors won't know that they are taking part at all. Though she doesn't promise to accept the winner, Kajika is amused and agrees to play along. The girl-dealing-with-clique-of-dreamy-guys theme reminds me of Boys Over Flowers. Although Kajika standing up to the delinquents in Japan was kind of lame, the theme as a whole seemed intriguing.

Unfortunately, episode two seemed kind of corny and led me to fear that my early hopes for this show may have been dashed. Kajika's conviction that her pet leopard, Mustafa, has been resurrected seemed pretty ridiculous, and the first contender for her hand seemed stereotypically dark and mysterious. I wasn't so sure about this show anymore...

As a matter of fact, I've decided to dispense with Hanasakeru Seishounen, and I won't even bother to save the episodes in case my interest revives, since that seems very unlikely. Saving series to watch later is what I often do for iffy series since I seldom have the time to watch all the shows that are currently airing.

Rent Jan-Chan [series:2058#967]
A teenaged Kugami-sama (or Kajiki-sama) is pulled out of her Japanese high school by her father, shipped to America and told that he wants her to meet three men – three chosen potential suitors and she must decide between them who her future husband will be.

But what of her childhood friend, the dangerous and dashing Li-Ren? Will he just idly sit by and risk having his Kajiki swept away and having her heart stolen?

And so Kajiki's adventure begins... As she learns of her family history and of the mysteries of her heart. One of her suitors is a young prince from a (fictitious) Siam peninsula kingdom. And while Kajiki and prince seem to get along very well, there are hidden mysteries that tie the two together a deep level.

The end result is a ‘girl’s romance story’ - full of saccharine romantic scenes and unrealistic situations added only to heighten the thrill factor of an otherwise sedate dramatic series.

If you like classical ↗romance stories full of brave knights and princes, danger and intrigue, then this is story that is certain to offer a special thrill....
