This feels like an anime that wants to be much more yet its limited run prevents it from doing so. Denpateki na Kanojo seemed to be setting itself up as an episodic mystery title with psychological elements focused on the depravities of members of the student body in Juzawa's school and the mysterious girl who proclaims herself to be Juzawa's servant from centuries ago. While this would seem like an intriguing setup for a TV anime series, running it in OVA format greatly limits any sort of connection we can have for the major characters as we get very limited details on Juzawa and Ame accompanying him at school. The psychological elements are well implemented into the mysteries that Ame and Juzawa explore with focus on an apparent rape victim and a "happiness game" that seems to be connected to a string of pranks and incidents getting increasingly hostile and life-threatening, though this focus has its over-the-top elements with some characters losing their sanity for no apparent reason. The animation for Denpateki is quite lively despite its dark and violent moments as it sports vivid color, beautiful scenery shots, moments of fluid movement from characters and well-detailed scenery and character designs.

If this were a TV anime series that expanded upon the depth of its major characters and it polished up on the rough elements to its psychological focus to its mysteries, this could have been quite the gem for me to get into. As it is though, Denpateki na Kanojo has some potential elements yet will mostly linger as a "what if" for how I thought this series could have better worked out.

First off, the synopsis above (as of 2010-11-11), does nothing to give a well... synopsis of this series. Very misleading. Second, the pic (still as of 2010-11-11) almost gives an assumption that this series could be a "harem" or maybe even a "sudden girlfriend" type of plot. Boy, are they both waaaaay off.

Art, Animation & Character Designs
Where it shines is the artwork. Although alot of it is on the darker side, it still is full of details and vibrant colors. The character designs weren't left out either. They were equally as good and detailed. One thing however. This series tends to use some CG here and there and almost seem out of place. Take for example the opening scene where the camera is flying over the cityscape. At least to me, it seemed off, or rather didn't fit the following sequence of animations.

Music
The soundtrack was mostly of pianos, bells and similar. At times, it would be a bit eerie, other times, solemn. For the most part, the soundtrack was on the darker side. It added well to the mood of the series as a whole..... rather OVA. Not bad really.

Series and Episode Story
I pretty much agree with KBanger1 below. This story is pretty far out there. My first impressions were based on the synopsis above and the image to the right as I mentioned a few sentences ago. And as mentioned, I was way off. Instead, what I got was a pretty twisted story of a pair of twisted siblings. One thing for sure, this series is graphic and disturbing.

Now because this is an OVA, a two parter at that, one can't expect a tight-knit plot. In fact, this one definitely isn't one. You're thrown into bits and pieces of the story without any background so you're pretty much on your own.

Overall, it wasn't bad. Wasn't what I expected but it wasn't boring or lousy either. Just a mild entertainment.

I'm kind of on the edge about this OVA. What I mean is that I don't know whether to give it a Rent because the story is so out there, or Avoid because the story is so out there. There really is no need to give a brief synopsis because the story is so full of gaps that it would be impossible to give some linear explanation. All I know is that there's a delinquent named Junzawa and some weird girl named Ame who declares to him that she's his knight/servant. From there, it's just a series of events that make up this two episode OVA.

It's visually put together well. Nothing outstanding but well animated. There are some little "easter eggs" during the first episode that hints out some other anime. The visual is what makes me want to say Rent. What makes me want to say Avoid is the story. There really was no main plot except for the fact that Ame always points out that Jun and her has a bond from ages ago. I'm not gonna spoil what that means so you'll have to watch it. Back to the story...there was very little background to the main characters except for a short flashback. Otherwise, there really wasn't any explanation for their bond (if there was any bond to begin with). Drop in a few characters from nowhere, a crazy little sister, people who want to kill/hurt Jun, and you got yourself an enigma of an anime. The psychological twist really puts things into perspective but since the plot was so out there, I felt there was no substance. No background plus the short length to boot (even though it was 2 long 44 min episodes) makes it stay in Watch limbo.

Does this want to be a weird little high school romance or a bloody-n-violent horror story?

It is a mix of both, as the main character Juuzawa finds himself 'stuck' with a cute little follower who devotes herself to him completely. But the city that they live in is darkly troubled by a number of bloody & gruesome murders committed by people who stalk the night and appear to be unstoppable.

When their class prez is attacked and killed, Juuzawa and Ame decide to try to track down her killer ......

There might be more OVA episodes which would explain more ... but my take on this is that it tries to be a high school story with a very dark horror twist (much like the very popular Higurashi or the School Days series).

Ever hear of the Japanese term Yandere?
