(One episode watched): This is one of those shows for people who are curious about the history and development of anime. Both the style of the OP song and the technology with which it was originally recorded are antique--yet it is still a snappy and fun tune. As is to be expected, the animation is crude--not sloppy, just primitive in comparison to what we're accustomed to today. Background music plays a major part--I'm tempted to say it is overdone, but maybe this was SOP 37-odd years ago. This episode kind of reminded me of Disney's The Little Mermaid. The episode itself seemed kind of childish (not moving fast enough for me), but the preview of the next episode surprised me as it suggested that Mako might encounter some fairly adult situations as she adjusts to life as a human. I was intrigued, but the station break included a subtitle declaring this to be a "one-time release only", which I take to mean that no more fansubs are on the way. I never intended to watch more than a handful of episodes anyway. I had never heard of this series until this episode showed up as a fansub, and when my computer refused to save an image to illustrate this page, I doubted I'd be able to find one elsewhere. To my surprise, Mako-chan seems to have been quite popular at one time, as you can tell from the list of alternate titles. Doing a little website research on this series has been as fun as actually watching it. For one thing, I stumbled across an interesting website (see below). There are two Mermaid series currently running in Japan, but perhaps they have been a subject of interest for longer than I had thought! Last updated Wednesday, August 01 2007.
