Egad, this movie was a mess and that's saying something for the decent to high quality films you would normally expect out of Ghibli with story and animation. Visually, the movie is decent sporting beautiful and vast landscapes with a good amount of detail and moments of fluid animation. The music was even worth listening to at points as I did enjoy the music-less version of Tehanu's song in the middle of the film. But in terms of plotting and characterization, this movie was a bit of a mess. It fails to explore major elements of the world of the movie like magic and the Balance that continued getting spouted by Sparrowhawk, too many questions are left unanswered such as what drove Arren to kill his father, Cob's a shallow baddie due to his lack of depth and the ending is just too riddled with deus ex machina for me to even care for what happened to everyone in the end. This is definitely one of the worst Ghibli films I've seen from the studio to date, alongside Ponyo.

Like Forbin, I watched the UK version, but unlike Forbin, I do remember reading Ursula K. Le Guin’s books in my youth. (She has been writing fantasy novels since 1964.) If you have some young teenagers who enjoy reading, then the Earthsea stories are certain to entertain them.

But the translation to an 80-min animated movie falls far short of the magic of the original story. Just too much is hacked and chopped off to be condensed into this short format. If one can accept good animation (not great) in a style reminiscent of Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa, with a weak story and alot of unanswered questions, then this is worth the watch – but not much more.

It wasn't too bad, I saw the UK version. It was more unfocused than Howls and it didn't help that I haven't read her novels.
