There are times where it's good to simply sit back and laugh at the mindless, nonsensical antics of an anime comedy if the premise proves unique enough and Ramen Fighter Miki delivered enough to give me enough humor throughout its run. Basically poking fun of the absurdities found within battle action-style anime titles from cliches found in shounen titles to sentai shows, Ramen Fighter Miki features the titular "heroine" (and I use the term loosely) Miki getting into random mischievous acts that screw up her daily routines as a delivery girl at her mother's ramen restaurant. From confronting old classmates with a score to settle with her from years of bullying to a bulldog who is bad enough to equal Miki in her fighting skills, the show is very good in the execution of its comedic timing to keep things unpredictable to first-time viewers from start to finish. This series won't be for those wanting an ongoing plot or a bit more character depth in their anime as Ramen Fighter Miki consists entirely of episodic segments with little to no linearity with one another and the characters being rather simple in their personalities. But if you are looking for a fun nonsensical comedy anime to get into, Ramen Fighter Miki is definitely worth a look.

An obsessed 'Star Ranger' (Power Ranger-like) grocery store owner, a beautiful bakery store owner whose an expert at throwing wooden skewers, and a ramen shop poster girl whose has some serious fighting skill but zero common sense. Add them all up along with a whacked out cast and a tiny yet vicious dog and you get Ramen Fighter Miki. No major story here except what Miki does in her 'average' day. Normally, I would brush this off like I did with Arcade Gamer Fubuki, but I gave it a chance and was surprised. Even though there is no linear plot, it was just crazy characters doing their thing. I was hesitant at first because of my experience with Japanesque comedy. Some of it is absolutely hilarious while some are meh. If you don't understand the humor it's probably because you may not have seen any live TV Japanese shows which normally would have some of it's own comedic culture. Fortunately, in this day of age, almost everyone who has a computer can now watch pretty much anything. Back to the anime...the wild and often random comedy that this anime shows is just too damn funny. You have Miki, a highly energetic girl who seems to screw up the simplest tasks. Now and them, Megumi (bakery owner) has some serious beef with Miki that seems to rival the animosity between Tenchi Muyo's Ayeka and Ryoko. The only difference is that Miki and Megumi aren't fighting over some boy. What caught my attention was the blatant comedic randomness. If it's not Miki going back and forth from her ramen shop, it's her mom beating the life out of her. If it's not that, it's Megumi trying to make Miki's day a little more miserable. If it's not that, then it's Kankuro (cat-like weirdo) who keeps challenging Miki to a fight every day and getting beat everytime or Ohta (grocery owner) obsessing over a Power Ranger like show and pretending to be the 'Red Star Ranger'. Just simple yet random situations is what kept me watching. It's something different almost every episode. What probably is it's one slight flaw was the way they take a joke and just overkill it. For example, Kankuro keeps challenging Miki to a fight. Although, he mixes it up a bit, the same outcome as always. It's funny after the first 2 - 3 times, but then we get the picture. However, the randomness of each episode is enough to make that flaw seem very minor. With that said, the art/animation are good (especially that little clip of Miki acting like the "MGM lion" who is in the beginning of every MGM movie. A lot of SD (super deformity) but not overdoing it. Just done in the right times where some of their jokes are about to be shown. The opening intro is quite deceiving especially if you expected this anime to be a like a fighting series. It's no Battle Arena Toshinden (thank God) but it says it all in the title itself. If you're not used to seeing random comedy and think it's just mindless silliness, then this may not be something you may like. If you at least give it a chance, it may surprise you like it did me. Art, Animation and Character Design Nothing special here. Everything from art, animation to character designs were more or less like any other anime. Actually, the frame rate seemed pretty low and at times choppy. However, this actually made this style of animation with the way the character's faces were exaggerated, fitting. Some the character facial animations were so silly at times I would find myself laughing out loud at the absurdity. Music The opening theme song was okay, but I didn't see it fitting the anime. In fact, the opening animation didn't fit the anime or its story. Episode and Series Stories With plenty of parody going on and crazy fighting scenes this one turned out to be pretty okay. Some of the comedic actions were so absurd and violent but still funny and enjoyable. There's really nothing of the plot to speak of. What made this anime fun to watch was just purely the crazy antics and watching Miki go crazy in her lust for fighting. Overall, good anime to watch. (All episodes watched): I saw a mention of this show in a magazine and downloaded it in it's entirety. I was feeling quite pleased with myself until I watched the first half of episode one (each episode seems to have two seperate short stories to it), and was left with the impression that MKM was heavy on slapstick violence without all that much genuine wit to it; not a Girls Bravo sort of show, but it seemed disappointing nevertheless. I reluctantly watched some more MKM, and fortunately found succeeding half-episodes were somewhat better than the first one. Still, I couldn't help feeling sorry for Miki's opponents rather than rooting for her. As Miki's own mother puts it, "You're always picking on people. How could anyone see you as a good person"? To be fair, Miki doesn't usually start fights, but she takes devilish delight in beating the crap out of people (Kankuro, mainly) once they do get started. Plus she's a pretty pathetic worker, so why should I sympathize with her? Luckily, I did sympathize with the remainder of the cast--"Hell's Bunny" was good, I wish she had gotten more airtime. This actually turned out to be a fairly fun and amusing show, contrary to my first impressions, though it took me several months to watch the entire series (even though it's relatively short). There are times when I want a deep, compelling story which rich characters. There are other times when I want some whacky, comedic fun. This happens to be one of those titles.
This series primarily is a parody one. There are all sorts of things parodied including the shounen fight anime titles, the American west, the "Power Rangers" type sentai shows, and more. Everything centers around the main character Miki-chan, who is a pretty girl, somewhat clumsy, yet can kick everyone's tail except for her mother. She works at her mother's Ramen shop serving customers, cleaning the place, getting customer so come in, and making deliveries...when she's not distracted by those wanting to fight her. Since she's nearly invincible when it comes to fighting, other characters in the neighborhood such as Megumi-chan (who works across the street at the bread store), Kankuro (think Kyo-kun from In addition to parody, physical comedy plays a large role in this series. So if you don't see the humor in folks fighting and getting their clocks cleaned, this title won't be for you. There's really not a lot I can say about this anime as it is one that has to be seen to be appreciated. Is it the funniest thing I've ever seen? No. In fact, there was only one really funny episode (#3) where Miki-chan finally meets her match in battle. And yet I found myself really enjoying the craziness in this anime and loving the nutty characters that live in this world. It is this element that took the series to that next level to where I would watch it again with no problem. Bottom line: One of the nuttier anime titles I've ever seen, and I doubt it will be for everyone. If you are looking for a very silly and light-hearted piece of anime fluff, then this is pretty good bet. Onimaru Miki is absolutely clueless and thoroughly violent, but all of the calamities that she gets involved in somehow seem to turn out OK. I have posted some snaps of episode one.
