This was my only exposure to Ken Akamatsu's latest popular manga series in the form of Mahou Sensei Negima!. And my expectations of the series aren't very high from what I've seen. This special is filled to the brim with fan service as the entire special felt like an excuse to see the entire female cast in bathing suits. I noticed a number of characters who bared personalities similar to Love Hina characters with Negi seeming like Keitaro, Asuna as Naru, and Nodoka as Shinobu. While the OAV didn't feel like a harem in the same path as Love Hina, it doesn't do a very good job of trying to make itself fresh.

Ken Akamatsu is well known for his attractive designs of female anime characters and in that department, Negima doesn't disappoint. There are enough cute, attractive, and beautiful girls in Negi's class with their own different personality and hobbies and the OAV format does well enough to show all this off.

However, nice visuals and beautiful girls won't be enough to sway me into enjoying Ken Akatmatsu's latest popular title.

Rent Stretch [series:1364#628]
Ah, this was fun. The comedy was good, and I think in general this OVA just made more sense than the typical episode of the TV series did.* That is, there was an ongoing plot thread (why Asuna is angry at Negi) which was resolved pleasantly in the end, whereas the TV episodes oftentimes are a madcap roller-coaster ride which leave me unable to explain exactly what has happened in the end. Presumably this OVA was made last Spring after the last TV episode had been shown (but as far as I know not all have been fansubbed yet), and given Negi and Asuna's attitudes towards each other, I wonder how the TV series ended. This OVA is definitely somewhat more risque than the TV episodes were. There is an abundance of station break type eyecatches, one for each and every girl in the class--only a football game could actually have enough commercials in the space of half an hour to make use of them all.

I was under the impression that this was a sequel of Negima!?, given the identical character designs, but having read the other reviews here it seems to be based on Mahou Sensei Negima!. It's Negima!? which I'm comparing it to here.

There's not a whole lot to say here. This OAV was taken from a story in the manga where Asuna and Negi have a fight, ending with him using the term paipan on her. As a result, Asuna doesn't speak to him, even when the entire class goes to a resort island owned by Ayaka's family. The basic anime story is the same, though paipan isn't used. Because the story isn't much, a lot of time is killed by having eye-catches for each of the girls in the class. Further, a lot of effort is put into fanservice with all the girls being in swimsuits. The only new material was Eva's quest to slay a chupacabra rumored to live on the island.

All of the fanservice was just pointless and in the way for me. I know its supposed to be funny when Setsuna gets turned on and tries to get a closer look at Konoka-chan whenever she bent over or was on all fours, but I wasn't laughing. Beyond that, I just found myself bored with the episode.

Bottom line: I suppose its worth a watch. If you haven't seen the replacement Negima!? series, this will give you an idea as to the character designs and some of the exaggerated things done (like Asuna's hair movements) there (only with much less fanservice). But if you skip this, you haven't really missed anything.

Watch Forbin [series:1364#1573]
Analysis: Spring Watched
  • Drama : Low
  • Comedy : Med
  • Action : Med
  • SciFi : Low
  • Ecchi : Med/High
Looks like since Shaft didn't want ANY kind of ecchi in the TV series, they decided to go all out in the OVA.

Things such as Asuna naked, Setsuna having fantasies about Nodoka's very skimpy swimsuit to the very revealing outfit that Ayaka has on.

Finally, why did I mark it a watch? Because while it followed the spirit of the manga chapter it comes from, it's real purpose was just to show off a lot of skin. Also if you haven't read the manga this won't make a lot of sense as they assume you know how Evagenline can get off the island.

Note : As Spring and Summer have different release dates, I'm going to change this entry to Spring Only.

Also just like Stretch, this is my Review #300!
