Art, Animation & Character Designs The first thing I noticed was the huge eyes! Giant eyes! Like bug eyes giant!! Ok, so i'm slightly exaggerating. Some of the girls remind me those "Tarsiers".... those monkies with those giant buggy eyes.... The artwork wasn't impressive and seemed below par. Animation was also below par. Character designs were a mix. Some looked well done... mainly the "tough" looking "serious" guy like "Onizuka" and "Kuon" (girl). But then, some were just uglier than those Tarsiers.... like "Hitomi" and "Tamaki". Music The OP was cheesy. But it seems to work for this series as a whole. It sounded like an 80's lullaby. The soundtrack had a mixture of flavors. There was some hill-billy style banjo pieces mixed with various quiet piano lullabies. Series and Episode Story The biggest problem with this series is the potential plot that didn't go anywhere. It tends to jump around a bit with gaping plot holes big enough to drive a 18-wheeler through. It started off pretty cool but fizzled right after the first episode. In fact, the first episode gave a completely wrong impression of the series.... where I was expecting a street fighter type of series. Instead, what we get is a series about an unbeatable "samurai" girl "chosen" (for no apparent reason) to help prevent some "god" from threatening the world. There were some potentially good characters but they didn't amount to anything throughout the whole of the series.... like Onizuka. Overall, acceptable series that had no real plot and too many plot holes. It barely passes as a watch. Last updated Sunday, March 21 2010. Created Sunday, March 21 2010. |
The series opens with a cool fight scene akin to a Street Fighter game. But somewhere along the line we got lost.....||||||||

At first Ryoko, a girl who effortlessly beats the crap out of countless people (though to be fair, they're the ones who started it), didn't appeal to me very much. As I rewatched the first episode in dubbed form, I noticed how nicely timed the jokes were and how fun the SD comedy was. I generally prefer subtitled anime, but this seems like a show that somehow works just as well in dubbed mode. I suspect that Wendee Lee can be thanked for this--shows that she's involved in tend to be well dubbed and seeing her name instills a bit of confidence in me. Another distinctive voice was that of David Lucas. One thing which immediately caught my eye was how ultra cute the female characters are. That sassy girl who wants Ryoko's boyfriend is a fun character who you can't help liking. There's plenty of pantsu fanservice. Fight scenes seem well animated--when stills aren't employed, that is. As for the plot, I still have little idea where it's going after nine episodes, but I haven't lost interest either. Perhaps that's because this is a much more silly show than I had expected, and relies more on weird comedy than drama and plot (which is fine with me). Ryoko finds herself drafted to play the absurd role of "Oyster Lulu", a restaraunt mascot, which was hilarious. The climactic scene of episode nine, "Super Transformation: The Seven Witches" made me laugh so much that it brought tears to my eyes. This is a fun show which I look forward to watching. P.S: I still hope to rent the final DVD some day, it's just that my rent-DVDs-by-mail service is somehow missing it! My favorite line: "That was so cool!" --Kusanagi 9/07 Last updated Sunday, March 16 2008. Created Friday, June 01 2007. |

OH!! .. while this series does have some modest measure of fan service, it is still should be rated PG10+, (Hey! remember that is a Tokyo-Pop release and they don't really license any of the new, strange and fun anime series.....) Episode titles: 01. Samurai Girl Appears
|
I bought the (Tokyo-Pop - R1/USA - English dubbed release) boxed set a while ago and I am happy to have it in my anime library. While this series will win the strongest kudos with the teen-crowd, it probably would only rate as a fun <rent> for any serious anime fan. Focusing on a story line of a strong samurai girl holding hidden romantic feelings for her kendo-club sempai, the other mystical elements of the story leave a lot of unanswered questions and open issues, but it does prove to be charming and simple story of fun fights and strangeness that will provide a few hours of anime distraction. This series is well worth the watch, but remember not to expect much in tying off the lose ends and .. just enjoy the story. It works very well at this level!! ||||||||
