Before Suguru faced the dire threats to humanity from Management, he had to fight the truly important battle--the right to dirty thoughts! However, when the ever vigilant Mahoro recruits Rin, Chizuko, and Miyuki to eliminate Suguru's precious "H" (ecchi) collection, he must make a stand! Fortunately, he can rely on the help of his friends, Hamaguchi and Kawahara, but what sacrifices must be made for the greater good?

The Summer special seems to be an extra treat for Mahoromatic fans. Don't expect major things in the plot department to be revealed here as this special is devoted to Suguru defending his porn collection from Mahoro and his friends making for a comedic treat. This special also provides a look into how Mahoro started to hate all things 'ecchi.'

The reason this is a Watch is that being just an extra for fans of the series, I wouldn't have interest in wanting to have repeated watches of this. Not to mention I would rather watch a fansub of it than waste $20 or $30 on a single episode to watch on DVD. Pioneer USA should have just included it as an extra on one of their DVD volumes.

Otherwise, not much else to say. I will say that this special will be a big treat for Mahoromatic fans if they enjoyed both seasons.

This summer special is a strange little OVA. It occurs 3 or 4 episodes BEFORE the end of Mahoromatic: Something More Beautiful series. I laughed, I wondered who the heck the blonde girl was (I didn't watch SMB till afterwards). And of course I enjoyed the girls. Hehe.

Too bad this is a SINGLE episode on the R1 DVD. I'm not paying full price for 20 minutes. That's why it's a rent, if should've been included on the 2nd DVD as an Extra.

While the entire Mahoromatic series is too ecchi for my tastes (the manga has an even greater ecchi content), I have to say that I've enjoyed watching the series. This TV Special I found to be the funniest of the lot.

I'm not sure why this special was done as it obviously had to backtrack in order to be told. But there must have been a demand for another humor-filled episode with Mahoro-san and Suguru-san. And this is funny. Watching Suguru-san try to protect his ecchi (porn) collection from being destroyed was funny. Mahoro-san managing to get Minawa-chan and the rest of Suguru's female friends in on the act (as well as Shikijo-sensei) made it even funnier. Heck, even Slash got roped into this battle. I just laughed and laughed.

Still, it is very ecchi. The lolicon crowd will be pleased to hear that all the girls get naked and their breast get fully exposed. Ironically, this isn't Gainax's most ecchi title. That belongs to Ebichu the Housekeeping Hamster

Bottom line: I have to believe that fans of the series will enjoy this "filler" TV Special for all of the laughs. I did.

I listed this as an "acquired taste" because if you liked the two seasons of Mahoromatic you'll almost certainly like this extra episode, and if you didn't, you won't. Stig Hogset at THEM Anime Reviews despised it and described it as "twenty three minutes that I'll never get back", whereas Chris Beveridge at Anime on DVD said that "It's quality level is essentially the same as the TV series itself and it just shines beautifully here". I think the basic factor which determines whether viewers like the Summer Special or not is whether fanservice offends them--if it does, stay away, because there's plenty of it here. Beveridge theorized that the special might have been made to appease viewers who disliked the controversial ending to Mahoromatic: Something More Beautiful. Personally, I was quite pleased with the ending (even if I didn't understand it), and have no objections to fanservice, so I enjoyed myself. I think this episode could have easily been inserted into the second season, where several episodes were pretty much filler for fun's sake without much, if anything, to do with the main plot. I still think that throughout the various Mahoromatic incarnations Gainax was more ridiculing fanservice, than exploiting it as a substitute for good humor and writing!
