The city of Lux is caught in a gang war between rival factions. Ichise is a young street fighter forced into the conflict, rising in importance after his crippled body is "texhnolyzed" with advanced implants. He is aided by his sexy doctor, a mysterious psychic girl named Ran, and mafia boss Oonishi. Together they must resolve their destinies and save the city from outside influences with unknown motives. The Class are super-texhnolyzed beings playing god with Lux and its precious resource Lafia - the key to integrating humans and texnolyze. Mysterious travelers from the surface world also have violent plans of their own. Time is running out.

Compared to the intrigue I got off Lain and Haibane Renmei, Texhnolyze just about bore the daylights out of me, so much so I found myself having to take breaks from it days at a time before I watched another episode. The lack of emotion from characters and a disjointed plot really pushed my tolerance for this title.

In terms of the environment, Texhnolyze does a good job of setting it up with a dark, dreary rundown urban environment full of hopelessness and chaos amongst the top factions of the city of Lux. Each faction has their own personal beliefs resulting in the clashes amongst each group. The artwork of Texhnolyze is full of dark color filled with plenty of detail in each of the environments we bare witness to. Character designs have the same amount of detail, especially with each of the texhnolyzed limbs that some of the characters receive for the loss of their limbs. Not to mention the action scenes in this title were quite fluid and fast without much loss in detail making for some good visual eye-candy.

But beyond all that, the series suffers with its characters and plotting. There wasn't much in the way of emotion with the characters which made it hard for me to connect with them. There tends to also barely be any spoken dialogue in some episodes of the show which left me wondering what was going through the minds of some characters or what was taking place onscreen. Then, there's also the issue of the plot. What I thought was a war between three factions later gets ousted suddenly by another group I knew nothing about who completely wipe out the other three groups. Thanks to the scarce amount of information offered on anything that takes place at some major points of the series, I can't even speculate on what I just seen. It got so bad I had to browse online for info on the series just to see what took place. Even then, I could still care less for what happened to everyone since things in the series felt lifeless.

Texhnolyze has some good eye-candy and a nice, dark environment. Unfortunately, the series felt too lifeless for my tastes and I had to struggle in finishing the series.

This is a fairly new series (2003) that is very unique and awesome (on my top 5 list). It comes from the same people that made Hellsing and Lain, so the mood is very dark, mysterious, and trippy. The sound effects are brilliant and chilling, and the hollow music fits the eerie ambiance. The characters are shadowy yet believable, and very original. That is the strength of Texhnolyze - it's creativity. If Kubrick made an anime, this would be it. You can't stop watching the next episode because you're dying to learn more about what's going on. The animation and visual design is stunningly bleak and grungy. Camera angles keep you interested and guessing. Scenes range from a sterile, surreal rural town to rusting, damp industrial slums. Nothing is as it seems, and each character has a secret past and personal motives. Unfortunately, you really need to watch the series (22 eps) a few times to catch all the clever subtleties and story details - but it's enjoyable and worth the time.
