Tsukihime was one of Type/Moon's first works in creating its world of magic and supernatural creatures. For this anime adaptation of the visual novel, its quality is a bit of a mixed bag which has led to some fans of the game to abhor and deny the anime's existence. Before I go into what issues I had with the series, I will go into what I enjoyed from it. The greatest strength of the series came from its focus on the bond between Arcueid and Shiki. The series takes its time focusing on the chemistry of the two characters as Shiki is dragged into Arcueid's vampire hunt and learns his family is hiding secrets that could connect them to the vampires causing trouble throughout the series. There is enough depth given to Shiki's character where I did come to know of the circumstances that led him to live with his sister Akiha and how he came to acquire and deal with his Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. I could also buy the relationship Shiki comes to have with Arcueid as Tsukihime took its time with developing the bond in which the two have. The visuals are solid for the most part sporting a clean presentation with vivid colors and a decent amount of detail with scenery and character designs. The show's soundtrack consists of mostly stringed and piano musical tracks that fit very well with the mellow and tense moods that Tsukihime gives off in its various scenes.

But as I've discussed above, Tsukihime's anime adaptation does carry some significant flaws to it. Beyond Shiki, most of the other prominent characters within the series get limited to no depth and the roles of some characters were downplayed for the anime to be supporting to background roles. Also because of the large focus on the developing bond between Shiki and Arcueid, the main plot involving their hunt for vampires often gets glossed over and there is barely enough time to explore how characters like Ciel and Akiha found themselves to be personally connected to the conflict, especially as these details are quickly laid out in the show's later episodes.

The anime adaptation of Tsukihime is a decent one for those who are fans of Arcueid and Shiki as the series does do enough to have you believe in their bond and the presentation does do a solid job in establishing the show's dramatic mood. However, this comes at the cost of barely digging into the visual novel's mythos and other prominent characters as they don't get as much consistent focus for this adaptation of the series. Your mileage will vary on how well you accept this adaptation of Tsukihime if you have sampled the visual novel, especially considering some among the game's fanbase deny the series even exists.

This series was recommended to me by King of Harems himself (Forbin) so this is my review of Tsukihime. A high school student, Shiki Tohno, possesses the ability to see lines that if severed can cause destruction or death. It goes for not only humans but everything he can see. He meets this blonde chic in the park one day and kills her almost immediately. For what reason that is unknown as well as the fact that she returns to life. Now that's just part of what goes on and with me, I don't give much in the way of a story so you'll have to see it yourself (as always).

This was supposed to be a a harem type of anime but for me it didn't really suit my taste. Although the story was very good, it was short. This could have been easily a 24 episode series but unfortunately it's not. It does take a slight twist to any vampire anime that's out there. You do have your stereotypical vampire bites on victims but that's where the stereotypes stop. Now, I've read up on vampires so I can say that there really wasn't any vampire-like action but more of a destructive to gore-like action. Think of Vampire Knight but with insane action and a vampire protagonist who can walk in daylight without being affected. To me, that's a bit of nonsense but like I said, it's a twist. That characters are not really memorable except for some of the females. If this series were longer, than it could develop into a lot more.

As far as the regular aspects go, the animation and art were great. Like I said, not exactly a harem (to me at least) but the story behind it makes up for that. It's not much a solid title but one that has to be seen. I did buy it for myself because it was ridiculously cheap but it's good for my money. Rent it and see if it's something you'd want.

This series is somewhat violent but not over the top. After seeing the first episode how Acruied gets sliced to shreds, I thought I was in for a super violent series however, it wasn't really that bad thereafter. If you're into vampire stories, you may not be too overexcited about this one. Sure, there's a character (Acruied) that's a vampire, sure there's a vampire-ish theme going on but that's about it. Acruied really doesn't do anything as a vampire. Infact, she's not your typical iconic vampire figure. She can walk in daylight, don't "really" crave blood, or sleep in coffins and don't turn into a dozen bats at will.

What this story really is about is her "vengance" if you will, to slay a particular figure between her 800 year beaty rests. Then of course, you have a developing love plots long the way, and not to mention quite a bit of school scenes with various characters. One of the characters (Ceil), was a disapointment in the end. Only for the fact that there were really no time to develop her background. She really didn't do much either but toss her weapon around a few times.

Overall, it was enjoyable to watch but left me wanting more... alot more.

After watching Blood+ and Last Exile, I thought, oh god not another one of those animes with some "simple" mystery/strange power/history surrounding the main character and it takes 50 eps just to find out what it is. Instead Shingetsutan Tsukihime was different. It just took 1 or 2 eps to find out the character's ability/history/purpose. I thought, "cool, i respect that." The director concentrated on the "story" rather than all these bs emotions (crying/questions etc) the character's would go through for 50 eps just to find out who/what they are.

The director was very good at building the back bone of a character so you could feel what they were thinking.

It was just an overall very good anime to watch, and not frustrating! Eg, you know how most animes have things that are very obvious but they drag it to 10000 eps before they act on it? For one example, in Shingetsutan Tsukihime, Shiki eventually falls for the blonde vampire, who already had a crush on him and he knows it. I thought, "i hope they get together". what happens next? they get together like Ros and Rachael from Friends but not 50 million eps later. simple.

Having said that, the main story of Shingetsutan Tsukihime wasnt just all straight forward. It had twists and turns that kept me up all night wanting to watching the next ep, knowing very well i had to get up 5am the next day.

There wasnt many fight scenes and the ones they had wont very good. But it didnt matter because the story line made up for it.

A true mystery, this is promising to be a great series. Everything's very nicely done and all (the artwork is gorgeous), my complaint is that there is no fighting. Ciel never ever uses her cool claw-like weapon that she holds on the cover art. Her fighting consists of throwing swords or that other pitchfork looking thing down to the ground to halt or kill the enemy. If that's all you're going to be doing then it's really more effective to throw small things don't you think? And Arcreuid is supposed to be the strongest vampire but...no fighting. Her eyes only glow and her enemies go flying. The knife Shiki uses and the knife duel with Roa is funny in that they used the sound effect of swords clashing. but heh. The rest of the fighting really can't be called fighting. It's a great mystery that plods along at an okay pace. You never really get invested in the characters except Shiki..if at all. They're just too vague and too mysterious and the glimpses of their past really isn't enough. It's a great mystery, but for $70 the box set (and only 12 episodes!), this really isn't worth buying.

This is a very interesting and enjoyable series...has to do with Vampires at the same time not related to vampires, you have to watch the whole series to understand and get the whole story, since the story is confusing even for the main character--Shiki---

Wow, I don't usually watch Vampire types but this is very good. Good story with a mix of Mystery and Romance at the same time.
I have NO IDEA why I like this anime, but I do. Vampires is defintely not my thing (I almost didn't watch Gungrave because of the first 10 minutes and I haven't watched Hellsing at all) but this really clicked and I love all the backstory that isn't even touched by the Anime.

OMG This is now one of my favorite 3 non Comedy animes! (Gundam Seed and Elfen Lied being the other 2). I will post more thoughts and some better screen shots than a side view of Arcuied soon.
This really sucks that it is only 12 episodes. They only had time to delve on the Arcuied arc, if you click the link below you will see that EACH of the girls (Arcuied, Akiha, Ciel, 2 Maids, and the other classmate) has a full backstory with Shiki and they only decided to use Arcuied's because hers is considered the 'true ending'.

For Chibi : BTW Get it during the periodical Geneon sale at RightStuf, I got the whole set for $12 new. For JC : I changed the Pic because while it is beautiful, it doesn't capture the feel of the anime. (Arcuied never appears in that form in the anime).

While this 12-episode epic leaves several questions open at the end, it is most definitely an original take on a cliched theme. Though I am not a fan of horror or vampire stories, this series transcends these genres into a broader story. A must watch.
