Ayu Tateishi is a very popular, athletic girl at school. Nina Sakura isn't popular and in addition to admiring Ayu, she has a secret -- she's a mahou shoujo! When Ayu finds Nina's missing mahou PDA, Nina decides to reward her in her upcoming tennis match against a member of the boy's tennis club. Oh the hilarity of it all!

[1 OAV episode based on the manga of the same title. This should be considered a stand-alone title separate from the TV series Ultra Maniac. The main part of this story is repeated, with some modifications, in episode 3 of the TV series.]

Cute, funny, and at times reminded me of Azumanga Daioh. Basically you have the popular girl Ayu becoming friends with the unnoticed Nina after finding and returning Nina's magic PDA. Apparently, mahou shoujo's no longer carry magic wands as that's old fashioned!

The OAV introduces us to the main characters including two male characters: Kaji and Tsujiai. Ayu really likes Kaji-kun, who's on the baseball team. Tsujiai-kun is his best friend and is in the boy's tennis club. When the boys tennis club and girl's tennis club argue over who has the rights to additional court space, a match is set up between Tsujiai and Ayu. Since Ayu found and returned Nina's magic PDA, Nina decides to help her out.

As I mentioned, there are moments where this reminded me of Azumanga Daioh. When characters go into "shock mode", they have the same look-feel that the cast of Azumanga Daioh had in shock mode.

Bottom line: The OAV is cute and funny though not in a belly-laugh kind of way. As an entrance of the manga into the anime world, I think it is a good one and I plan to see where this goes with the TV series.
