From their site: Welcome to the United Systems Sports Academy [USSA], where the elite from around the solar system come to hone their athletic prowess with the technologically enhanced training facilities and the renowned coaching staff.
For many, the grueling, full contact competition against humanities strongest and most ambitious athletes is the beginning of a dream to become the next Tomoe Midou, the first Battle Athletes Competition winner, and most famous of all sports champions. However, for Akari Kanzaki, Tomoe Midou's daughter, the trails of the academy and it's scheming students provide a path of self discovery and a chance to step out from her mothers shadow.

Mostly felt indifferent about this one. Battle Athletes depicts a typical "doing your best" storyline with Akari's character as she participates in a galactic competition deciding on who is the best female human athlete. The series consists of the typical archetypes and cliches you can expect of this approach such as the genki gal (Tanya), the reigning champion (Lahrri), the strange foreigner (Kris) and the cruel person proclaiming to be the champ's rival and trying to deter the lead's efforts (Mylandah). The series also tosses in the occasional fan service shots with non-detailed nudity from some of the girls in bath scenes, Kris' "prayer moments" and the school president being your garden variety pervert. The story isn't a bad one, but it's hard for me to care about with the pacing feeling quite rushed and the characters being as archetypal as they are. I also happen to have the TV anime of this series on me, which I hear tones down on the OVA's fan service and provides more development into both the competition and its cast. I'll likely sample it at some point, but I'm not very likely hopping back to this OVA series anytime soon.

I have no idea how I picked this one up. This isn't to say it's a series I would avoid, but rather.... I just don't remember picking it up. Must have been drunk or something when I did. So my thoughts?

Art, Animation & Character Designs
Artwork shows its age for sure. But even considering that it was produced (or released) in 1997 - 1998, it still looks pretty fair. Character designs weren't that bad..... especially some of the kawaii looking girls. And did someone mention anything about the hair styles? Hehehe! I thought the 70's and 80's had some cool hairdos, but this series takes the cake.

Music
The OP was a nice, catchy alternative with female vocals. The soundtrack is definitely from the 90's. The ED was a cute one..... and humorous. Not sure how to classify it.... but I guess it would be sorta an alternative?

Series and Episode Story
So having no clue in how I picked this one up, I sat and watched each episode through.... and found myself enjoying it for the most part. Basically, we have a futuristic setting where track-n-field types of sports are like the thing to do. Thus, we have a story centering around a group of girls who are competing to make it as the next "Cosmo Beauty".

We have plenty of antics here. Lots of laughs and silly moments. Some of our characters (Tanya to name one), brings the laughter to the episodes, and our comic releaf, "Ling-Pha". Aside from the laughs, we do get some emotional moments..... being that this series is all about competition. You're going to have winners and losers and you find yourself empathising with some of them, or cheering on others. One thing that did slightly annoy me was our protagonist. I kinda felt her character was out of place because she ended up whining more than not and had that "woe is me" mentality. When it comes to sporting competitions, that type of mentality really doesn't exist.

Overall, this was a fun series to sit through. I loved most the characters and the turn of events near the end made it that much better.

There is only one reason I watched this. Evil Ifurita from El Hazard! This is another one of those Striving to be the Best type of Animes. It's nice, and damn is the Ifurita clone nasty!

I liked it but Stellvia and Angelic Layer are better.

Have to admit I was skeptical when afriend got me started on Anime with this series. I was fortunate that he owned them all though, becauseonce I got started I couldn't stop watching! At one point I was actually yelling at Akari to get to it and throw her heart into her race! I liked the conflict between good (Akari, Ichan, etc.) and Bad (Various Competitors), and the way that there were multiple bad guys/girls. (It wasn't like watching a series where there is onlyone bad guy who keeps coming back, over and over.)Definitely worth the time, and worth the money- I had to buy a copy for myself!

A-KA-RI!! I love this series. Why? I can't put my finger on it. It's a very... simple... story, but with a lot of emotional tug. The characters, despite their funky hair styles, are real. This is also a nice comedy. Even my seven year old brother enjoyed this one (uhm, be warned, though: nudity of sorts), especially because of "Kris Kristopher." ^_-
