About as cookie-cutter as you can get for a shoujo series, Pretear is a combo of reverse harem and mahou shoujo cliches in its focus on Himeno and seven attractive boys with magical powers who take on "monster of the day" threats and an evil that the group are revealed to have past ties with. Classic shoujo themes like love, trust and betrayal get tossed around as morals for this series as Himeko comes to learn more of the enemy threat she deals with, learns to value the new family she has and also gains romantic feelings for one of the guys in her group. There is enough fleshing out on the major characters where they are shown to have motivation for their actions, but they are plot elements that I've been done before in mahou shoujo anime (former ally turned evil, one of the group goes rogue, dark feelings in a loved one, etc...) where it's not really too unique for me. Also, I could swear the budget for this anime must have been rather low as backgrounds look washed out and are lacking detail, certain animated content gets recycled and the character designs looked fairly rough in their details. Overall, this may be okay to show off to kids depending on your sensitivity as a parent to the transformation scenes and intense moments seen in later episodes. But unless you're a big mahou shoujo fan, this is cookie-cutter stuff and rather forgettable as a series.

and to be honest, doesn't anyone else see the subtle sexual innuendos (like in the pretear scenes)? lol. just kidding! i'm totally innocent and i know nothing about those kinds of things! hehe. Last updated Friday, March 16 2007. Created Friday, March 16 2007. |
A cute, light and well done mahou shoujou, neatly wrapped in a 13 episode package. There's a little drama and darkness towards the end, but of course, fairy tales and their happy endings. There's nothing too deep or dark about it, like i said, but it's a nice break from all the other heavy anime out there. the characters are all very loveable and huggable and as a reviewer said below, very distinct. i'd recommend it as an addition to any rounded collection and definitely a nice anime for kids and adults alike.||||||||

Fushigi Yuugi, Blue Seed, and Sailor Moon all rolled into one 13 episode series. I suppose that's what makes it fun to watch. Pretear's been compared to Snow White, but I don't know why. Besides Himeno being protected by seven guys, there are no similarities between Pretear and Snow White. The Leafe Knights have to find a Pretear, which is a female who'll help them fight the Princess of Disaster, and protect the earth's environment. It's sort of a sappy love story, but it's worth watching. I can only describe the animation and art as...cute. The character designs are pretty average anime character designs. I suppose the music is okay, but I don't like it. The dub is pretty good too. Luci Christian was a good choice for the voice of Himeno. Illich Guardiola and Chris Patton also did well portraying Hayate and Sasame. Pretear can be purchased in a 3 DVD boxed set for $25.00 - $30.00. ADV does make their anime releases affordable. This is another story that comes to alls well ends well. The animation is great the story line up is imaginative and a nice way to watch a fairy tale even if you aren't a kid anymore. My daughters aren't into anime but this is one they like. So if you want to become a kid again and you have liked Fairy Tales you are going to have to try this one out.

Pretear" surprised me more than once, and for that it gets extra points in the stats. The character design and artwork in general are, as other reviewers have said, quite scrumptious. The characters are well-written, especially considering what a short show this is and how many major characters there are. There's little danger of mixing them up with each other. It's fun to see how they worked elements of the "Snow White" fairy tale into the framework of a Magical Girl show. I found one element the storyline somewhat challenging, probably for cultural reasons. Without going into spoilers, I'll just say that I found the motivation of one of the "bad guys" to be of questionable validity. However, I suspect this element would not bother a Japanese audience, and in any case, it made me think--always a good thing from anime! The only reason I'm not giving this a "buy" is because I don't think I'll want to watch it multiple times. If you enjoy magical girl stories with some originality and/or the pretty artwork enough to watch more than once, then it would be worth buying. Last updated Monday, January 31 2005. When you've seen a lot of anime, you start to see some plot twists coming. Not that this is always a bad thing, but it means surprises will be rarer. "||||||||

I must say, seeing the dub being quite well done is another scary thing, since we all know how dubs normaly are not worth our time. For the effort however, this is a small anime series that deserves a huge buy. Seriously, I haven't been this obsessed about a magic girl anime since Sailor Moon, and that's been a long time. Ok, I've seen 8 eps, and trust me, this one could go on for a long while... very long. Of course, the major turns happen right in the middle of the series, and to get right to the point, major changes that would take 30-50 eps in another anime happen at this time.||||||||

The art is beautiful, the character designs are unique and attractive, each character has their own distinctive personality-- Even Shin and Hajime can be told apart, and they rarely get any screentime! The seiyuus were very well chosen (and a personal favourite of mine, Morikubo Shoutarou, played Goh ^^). I was surprised to find myself liking Himeno, and pleased to be liking pretty much the entire cast. From the smallest of characters (Mayune, Shin, Tanaka...) to the main characters (Hayate, Himeno, Sasame...), I was amazed by them all. My only complaint would have to be the character design for Kei (VERY different from the manga) but with that small annoyance aside, I *loved* this anime. I love to watch it again and again, and I searched long and hard for the soundtracks I finally found. It's highly reccomended. It's short, but engaging, lovely, and just great to watch.
