Ever since she watched a moving poem being read on TV, Hana Haruyama has been intrigued by recitation--the skill of reading to an audience. As a volunteer, she reads books to children. She will soon be enrolling at Sumomogaoka High School, and Mizuki Usurai, the president of the Broadcasting Club there, happens to be present at one of these readings. She is impressed by Hana's recitation skills and seeks to recruit her for the club. There's a whole world of excellence and competition in the field of recitation, Hana learns.

Hana wa Saku, Shura no Gotoku
(One episode watched):
An anime about recitation? That would definitely be unusual. I got a feeling early on that there would be a degree of sophistication to this show which is not common. With time, however, I became impatient for an explanation of just what it was about this skill that Hana found so intriguing. She 'aspires' to be as good at it as Shura Saionji, the girl who read the poem which got her started. OK, but why? This could always be just another anime which is about characters involved in some odd skill or sport just so that potential viewers will be curious. Hana says something about reciting allows her to be someone who she isn't, whatever that means. She has low 'confidence'. At the end of episode one I was confused about where exactly this was all going and whether reciting could possibly be an exciting topic. Mizuki has convinced Hana to join the broadcasting club, and we are about to be introduced to the other members. I suppose I should watch another episode, but at this point I am not excited. I noticed that the animation company behind this show was a new one and so were two of the three main characters.
