Early on, even before the OP sequence, I got a good feeling about this show, what with this otaku girl who is cast adrift by her favorite game shutting down ("Do you have any idea how much time and money it took to reach {her game characters'} complete limit breaks!?"). It seemed like this story was being told with some finesse rather than in the minimalistic, simplistic manner of most anime. At the end of the episode, however, I had a serious problem with this show: will it be about the colorful Minami and a couple of hopefully similar friends, or will it be about golf? Towards the end of episode one it was seeming sort of like a tutorial on getting started golfing. Sort of like an infomercial. Why had Akane been so eager to recruit a new golfer? Is it because she works at the driving range and that's what she's supposed to do? Nevertheless, this show seems to have considerable potential and I feel I must watch episode two, even if I do so with my fingers crossed. In episode two Minami and Haruka and two of the old men play a nine-hole game of golf. We learn a good deal about the tricks of the game, but my impression was that this show is going to be more about golf than about Minami and Haruka. We get a brief explanation of how Haruka got interested in golf long ago, and the comedy was modestly amusing. It looks like they are about to meet a third girl, and indeed in episode three Ayaka Hoshimi comes along. 'Hoshimin' is an old friend of Haruka and a college student, model, and online influencer. She needs some minor models to support her in a photo shoot, and Minami and Haruka get the job. Also, Minami takes on a part-time job at the golf center to support her new hobby. However, I was feeling a lack of excitement about this show when this episode came along. I don't detect any major problem that needs to be solved or feel that I know any of the girls well enough to care very much how things work out for them. A teenage girl might be thrilled that Minami got to work briefly as a model, but I wasn't. Minami still interprets things through a MMORPG filter, but just occasionally and not in a hilarious manner. As a result, I'm not exactly looking forward to more of this show. I almost skipped episode four, but in it Minami falls in love with an expensive golf club at a specialized golf store and must find a way to pay for it. Minami is likable but this show seems to be more about golf than about her, and as a result it is getting tiresome. Because for once I was pretty much on schedule to finish each of the anime I was watching this season, and actually needed more because I had been sick and was doing a lot of TV watching, I downloaded and watched the final episode as well. Minami has gotten the idea that today is her lucky day and perhaps she'll actually be able to complete a hole on par for the first time. But she can't find anyone to play the game with, so she must do it alone. I thought this was a clever, laid-back episode, in fact I decided to download all the episodes of Sorairo Utility that I didn't already have and watch them as well.
