Despite her supposed ineptitude with regular magic, Princess Annisphia defies the aristocracy's expectations by developing “magicology,” a unique magical theory based on memories from her past life. One day, she witnesses the brilliant noblewoman Euphilia unjustly stripped of her title as the kingdom's next monarch. That's when Annisphia concocts a plan to help Euphilia regain her good name—which somehow involves them living together and researching magic. Little do these two ladies know, however, that their chance encounter will alter not only their own futures but those of the kingdom...and the entire world.

Some have dubbed this anime to be a magical equivalent of Lycoris Recoil with the close relationship between two girls bordering on romantic and having its moments of action. However, I found this anime to be a bit more enjoyable one with its more fleshed-out story and characters, particularly Anis' lively character and her devotion to her Magicology studies. Both Anis and and Euphie's characters undergo different types of developments as Anis' devotion to Magicology is shown to bring her into conflict with other nobles due to wanting to hold onto their authority with magic, while Euphie gradually becomes a more assertive character instead of conforming to the expectations of others. It might not necessarily break any new ground as far as its developments and premise go, but there's enough meat to the story where I'd honestly admit I was entertained by Reincarnated Princess and the only major gripe I have with it is that it lacks a definite ending due to its light novel source material still being ongoing as of the time I prep this quick review. Still with what it has to offer, I'd say give this a shot if you crave a fantasy title with elements of yuri to go along with it.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:4587#628]
(Three episodes watched):

It was quickly apparent that episode one of this new series wasn't exciting me. Perhaps the problem is that there's very little that is new here. I just finished watching an anime based on the 'mean prince ends his engagement and switches to commoner girl' theme (Akuyaku--), and here it is again. One admitedly new touch is that the main character isn't the jilted girl herself but a princess (the bad prince's sister) who takes pity on her. Still, that's not a radical change and I don't see any signs of this show becoming intriguing. This princess, Annisphia, has a reputation as a troublemaker and lived in present-day Japan in her previous life; again, no surprises here. She supposedly is incapable of using magic, which normally is something that anyone who claims to be a member of the nobility can automatically do, and has apparently brought an infatuation with being able to fly from her past life. But wasn't she riding a witch's broom in scene one? If she is incapable of magic herself it seems that she can always acquire magical items which have the same effect. And apparently she's still dissatisfied because she can only fly at 'low altitudes' (but doesn't she soar high above the city in the final scene?). It sounds like Annisphia will employ 'Magicology', which seems to be using scientific knowledge from her last life to invent new forms of magic, if that makes any sense (also, another concept we've seen before). In general this all felt confusing and dull to me; my mind kept wandering as I watched. I didn't feel that I knew Annisphia or anyone else well enough to care what became of them. Another problem is that the jokes are not all that funny. i felt that Episode one of this show was so tiresome that I doubted if it will ever be much good and I thought I would dispense with it.

Actually, I watched two more episodes. Sometimes a lightweight show is just what I'm in the mood for. But since it isn't terribly funny I was looking for an interesting plot and so far it seems confusing and unmemorable. Anis has taken a liking to Euphilia--because she feels sorry for her? Because she's slightly lesbian? Because she needs an assistant? Something else? It isn't clear. The overarching central conflict of this show hasn't become clear. What will happen if Anis' plan to run a sort of invention workshop falls apart? What does this world need that only Anis and Euphilia can deliver? I don't know.
