Hiroshima e no Tabi
Seemingly made to have younger audiences relate to the struggles of those who suffered from the Hiroshima bombing during World War II, this OVA uses the events experienced through the aunt of one of the young male leads inspire his close friend to overcome his self-doubts following a failed suicide attempt and resume his interest in playing competitive ping pong for his school. The moral it attempts to push for with this parallel is rather simple and looks awkward in execution, especially considering the limited run time the OVA has to get too deep into exploring the struggles faced by the characters in question both past and present which reduced the emotional impact this could resonate with audiences. Plus, I got the impression any other sort of tragic backstory with the aunt could have been added to go along with the perseverance moral it was pushing for. Not trying to come off as cynical with this considering its intentions, but the handling of its story and moral left quite a bit to be desired for me.
