Yama no Susume Next Summit
(One episode watched):
Well, it looks like Yama no Susume was popular enough to justify a full-fledged 23 minute version. But I could not get terribly excited about episode one. When I looked back at my reviews of the previous shorts, I noted that one thing that struck me about the first one was that the characters seemed to leap out and grab the viewer. Here, I cannot say the same. Aoi re-encounters her old elementary school friend Hinata and is reminded of the promise she once made to go on a climb with her someday. The cast is quickly assembled without much time to get to know them; we meet four of the five main characters in just the first episode. Maybe the idea is to get the introduction of the premise out of the way ASAP so that new adventures can be undertaken; I do not know. But so far there didn't seem to me to be anything that was all that new about this incarnation of YnS. It sort of seems like a travelogue intended to recruit new visitors to a couple of hiking and climbing sites in Japan. Almost as much time is spent introducing us to folding tents and portable stoves than to the characters themselves.
