On their first day at high school, new student Raido notices that the diminutive girl sitting next to him, Reina Aharen-san, seems to be giving him the cold shoulder. For all that he can tell, she will not even speak to him and seems extremely uncommunicative. With time, however, he realizes that there's a reason behind her odd behavior.

While having many of the typical tropes of slice-of-life comedies with milking the quirks of the characters and having their fair share of bizarre moments, Aharen-san wa Hakarenai features some gradual development with its two main characters as far as their reserved personalities go and how close their relationship develops. It doesn't break any new ground as far as rom-coms and slice-of-life comedies go, but this element to the series does give it some depth to work with and lets it break out from other titles of its ilk.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:4454#628]
(One episode watched):

Do I detect a new subgenre in anime? Namely, shows about cute girls who for one reason or another have an odd quirk to their behavior?* A couple seasons ago there was the one about the attractive but incredibly shy girl, more recently the girl who can barely communicate, and now there's this similar one about a girl who has somehow drawn the conclusion that people will be annoyed if she so much as speaks to them. What they have in common is that the quirks make no sense at all, which I guess is supposed to be funny. Maybe male viewers like to picture themselves as these girls' saviors. If I understood this correctly, Aharen-san was once so noisy and outgoing that people found her to be weird, and now she has overcompensated by falling virtually silent. A solution that is far worse than the original problem, basically. The problem is that it isn't particularly funny, at least in my opinion. It's like these shows tell one weak joke with their premise and then expect us to keep laughing at it indefinitely. I found episode one to be painfully boring and at one point was hoping this would turn out to be a short and end soon. If the humor is weak, maybe there will be some sort of interesting plot. But the problem is that we don't really get to know either Aharen or Reito well enough to really care if they will fall in love or anything like that. There seems to be a large cast coming, which suggests a lot of weakly developed characters. I struggled through one episode and, while this show is completely unoffensive, I had no desire at all to watch any more.

*Come to think of it, there have also been several about boys with weird behavioral quirks.
