Unlike the prior Re: Zero OVA, Frozen Bond has some plot relevance to the series as it helps to further flesh out Emilia's character as it explores how she meets and establishes her contract with the spirit, Puck. There are hints of revelations yet to come with Emilia and Puck such as a mysterious event in Emilia's past that affected the elf village she lived in and Puck's reasons for wanting to aid Emilia. While nice to see this back story dabbled into, Puck and Emilia can't really carry things on their own and it did feel like parts of the OVA were added in just to pad out its runtime, such as the conflict the two get in with the villain of the film who doesn't offer much as a character beyond having hostility and prejudice toward Emilia. The action scenes that take place throughout the OVA are at least nice to see animated, such as Puck and Emilia's fight with a hostile spirit toward the second half of Frozen Bond. But her character doesn't quite feel as compelling to see develop compared to Rem and Subaru from the main series as Emilia is still pretty passive as a character by the end of the OVA. Still, Frozen Bond is still worth a look for those wanting to learn more about Emilia and Puck.
