Mad Bull 34. Angel Cop attempts to create a cyberpunk anime delving into terrorist activity and government corruption thanks to communism, but come across as really sloppy instead as it doesn't bother exploring in any way how Japan's present economic system is evil (the country had a bubble economy at the time of Angel Cop's Japanese release) and carries some anti-Semitic vibes when it has its shocking reveal for who is behind the terrorists later in the series. Manga Entertainment, fortunately, had the decency to axe this detail from their American release despite peppering their English dub with enough profane language that wasn't found in the original Japanese version and laughable dialogue ("If this is justice, then I'm a banana"). Many of the characters in Angel Cop are quite unlikeable and have very limited depth, especially in the case of our female lead Angel who has so little regard for human life that she was gonna shoot a terrorist down even when he had a child hostage. Worst of all, the series also suffers from a sudden ending where it doesn't bother exploring the fates of its cast (if anyone bothers to care) or future world after all is said and done. To seemingly make up for its sloppy plotting and characterization, Angel Cop tries introducing psychics and cyborgs into the mix for battle scenes, on top of some gory violence where heads literally explode from taking gun shots. Yet even the animation suffers here thanks to crude-looking character designs and animation shortcuts a plenty with battle scenes. Some of the character designs appeared to be made in mind for following aspects of pop culture in the 1980s, though the trends of the era were already fizzling out by the time Angel Cop got its first episode release in 1989. Overall, Angel Cop certainly earns its status being among the "Holy Trinity of Suck" with its unsympathetic characters, sloppy visuals, shallow and anti-Semitic plot, and laughable English dub. Unless you're going into this knowing what you're in for, avoid Angel Cop like the plague. Last updated Friday, March 29 2013. Created Friday, March 29 2013. |

I saw this a few months ago and was greatly impressed and is up there with my favourites (you can see how my views differ from the other previous guys). I thought the the story was just very exciting and enjoyable. There is also good action which also gives it more points.||||||||

This is a POS. Lets put it this way. The female cop shows up, she is OBVIOUSLY a female, but when she takes off her helmet, they have to show it 4 times like it's some big surprise. And the graphics make her look like the main guy from Fist of the North Star. Gasp. Please listen and avoid this piece of crap. Last updated Sunday, October 31 2004. Oh why didn't I listen to Midnighter.||||||||

Angel Cop was absolutely horrid. The animation is mediocre at best, the only thing saving it is some passably animated action sequences in episode 5. Otherwise, the ragged, sloppy animation is painful to watch. Character designs are lousy, pretty by the numbers "effort," unpleasant to look at and badly animated. The wooden and uninspired English dub reaches new levels of stupidity, featuring wonderfully horrific pieces of dialogue like, "If this is justice, than I'm a bannana!" Dear God... The story was absolutely inane, some convoluted nonsense about leftist communist terrorists who turn out to be pawns of some evil mastermind. The continuous anti-communist message is like something out of the cold-war Red Scare, and displays an absolute ignorance of the system it attacks, never bothering to ask itself WHY it is thought so evil. Nonstop mindless violence is, of course, the only solution. It doesn't help that all of the "heroes" are immensely dislikable, with Angel herself being well, there's no delicate way to put this...Angel's just a real bitch. Her disregard for those she's supposed to be helping (i.e. the common citizen) is disgusting. She doesn't care if the victem dies as long as the perp gets taken down. The supporting cast is no better, using torture and sadism to achieve their ends...and they're the GOOD guys! In short, Angel Cop feels frighteningly like a piece of McCarthy-esque cold war propaganda. Avoid this if quality is important to you. Last updated Tuesday, January 22 2002.
