Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai
(One episode watched):|
I guess you could say that I have two problems with this show. The first one is that the premise doesn't make much sense. Each of these girls is a genius in one field, but (and it took a while for episode one to make this clear) has no interest in it at all and wants to pursue another one. Furuhashi, for example, is a whiz at literature but wants to go into astronomy. Am I supposed to believe that she somehow inherited all of her knowledge of Chinese classics, but is a total doofuss in every other field, including the one she really loves? You could point out to her that she could easily make a handy living off of the talent she was born with, and pursue her true desire in her spare time. So, the basic conflict that drives the show is not all that interesting, indeed it seems sort of simplistic. The second problem is that the show is not particularly funny. At the station break halfway through the episode the thought occurred to me that I couldn't remember even smiling at any point. Furuhashi's tendency to put herself down wasn't funny at all. I may have smirked at a couple points in the second half but I definitely did not laugh, and with neither jokes nor a plot that are worth the expenditure of my time, what am I supposed to watch for? At the end I couldn't summon an ounce of interest in where the relationships between these three people would go, or whether they would achieve their goals, since none of them are interesting characters.
