New Fist of the North Star features everything that would make Fist of the North Star fans giddy from its Mad Max inspired setting to the gory deaths that Kenshiro and other martial artists can dish out on others, which this series actually retains from the manga series. Here, Kenshiro gets caught up in a civil war between two towns fighting for a vital water source, one of which is ruled by a dictator's manipulation of the masses in believing a boy's slight-of-hand tricks makes him into a god. The story structure plays out no differently from a typical episode of FotNS in regards of enemies being irredeemably evil, Kenshiro being an unstoppable force, and attempting to depict the futility of fighting for the sake of power and personal ambition. Here though, the show's typical themes are not as effective since main baddies Sanga and Seiji are not too remarkable as villains compared to past foes from the 80s anime and this series not really doing much to further flesh out the franchise as a whole. However, it does have a solid side story plot of Tobi, an information broker, who finds himself victim to the pressures of the civil war in caring for his ailing brother and becoming corrupted from the power he gains as an influential town figure. Still, New Fist of the North Star feels no different from a typical series arc of the 1980s action series albeit with not as remarkable a story to focus on. I'd only recommend this to more diehard fans of the series looking forward to the show's trademark gory martial-arts action.
